I go back to something I said on here after we bought Redmond, that he was Saints No1 target (as someone at the club told me, before rolling his eyes).

Højbjerg looks a good buy for a decent price.

Boufel, yes, a good player for what could be a low market price. Although, do wonder why it took so long to get him, if we really do have a "transfer strategy" ? Maybe his club was holding back, hoping for a bidding war. The timing felt a bit odd though.

I think Katarina has an emotional tie to us. She said her father talked of nothing else in the last year of his life and she mentioned recently his happiest day was the JPT final. I know keeping hold of a football club isn't like holding on to his favourite watch, but if you factor in that we are a good business investment anyway and she isn't short of money for food, I can see her holding on to us. And she attends most games...she doesn't have to do that...so she must want to.

Boufel said we had shown interest about 5 months ago...so he was in our sights.

As a fan I follow Saints as a hobby choosing to spend my own money. The board have to run Saints as a business. A successful business tries to make a profit, or at least not a loss. Not every business can be Apple or Google. We will never be Man Utd, Chelsea etc. Although I supported Saints in League One, I don't want to go back. For me the bottom line is -Don't get relegated, everything else is a positive. The board have done ok for me so far. A lot of fan seem to think they are entitled to success. If you don't like the way things are going at Saints, support Pompey, they need the fans. I think we have made some decent if unspectacular signings. We march on! Or shuffle on in my case.

No ones expecting us to spend like Man U/City, Chelsea, Arsenal etc, but when teams like Palace, Stoke, Bournemouth & Watford are spending more than us, there's something not quite right.

I find it interesting when people talk about Katerina carrying on Marcus's legacy. She is his legacy. The football club was his hobby. It's a bit like your dad dying and everyone expecting you to take up golf...

In which case u would sell his clubs to someone who was more interested in making use of them? Instead of letting the! Slowly rust in the garage?

Is it really about how much we spend though? Id have been happy with another under the radar sub 10m centreback, just feels like we are light in defence. And if Im honest there is nothing much wrong with the squad. J-Rod, Austin, Boufal, Tadic, Redmond is a pretty impressive front row. Everyone is underwhelmed after 3 games and fair enough. If we are struggling its in the management dept. Will we click this season is the big question.

I suspect we'll have a decent season. Probably not sixth again but do try to remember that after 37 games last year we were in a position to finish the season 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th so I don't attach too much emotion to the 6th place finish.

Whether we're strong enough or not, it's over, there's nothing anyone can do so we need to focus on winning games (and entertaining fans!)

I don't want us to spend for the sake of spending, but when we have holes in our squad like we do, I think the board have missed a trick here. I think we're light at Right back, Centre back and someone in midfield who can break up play, as Romeu simply isn't good enough at that. We could also use an extra attacking player, but I can understand why the club didn't move for one with this window with Rodriguez looking decent.

Agreed, and you're right, Jay Rod definitely looks better than he did when he came on against Man City last season. I'm just worried about injuries in crucial positions. CB really worries me if we lose Fonte or VVD for a long period. Romeu as well, at least last year when VW was banned, we had Romeu to come in.

We've basically spent as much as Bournemouth in the transfer window, but they didn't sell almost £50m worth of players.

Not good.[/QUOTE]

But they spent their money on Jordan Ibe

I think we have peaked to be honest. Are we really going to challenge the top 4 as was the original aim of "the journey" ??
We probably wont in my lifetime (i'm 37) and i'm ok with this. You cant rule out a suprise season like Leicester, but really i think competing in Europa consistently seems to be the next level for us.

I dont think we can achieve this aim with the current squad depth but shouldnt struggle in the league either. Just enjoy the ride til January and assess accordingly.
