Contract extensions are great, unless they are being used to validate a lack of punch in the transfer market. Every club extends contracts but I have never seen any other club justify reduced transfer clout because of this. I know we owe this board a huge debt and we owe KL even more, but that doesn't mean we can't question why most teams in this league can now afford (and I mean afford not stretch to) huge fees on big players and we can't. The amiunt of money we are taking for this season just for being in the league is astronomical. If there was a ground extension being built, I'd get it. The truth is though that we are doing a Rupert Lowe: resting in our laurels when we need to push on aggressively. It cost us a ginger manager we loved back then and it has done the same now.

    It
It's because we love Saints that we should question everything.

    MASSIVE CLUB KLAXON -

Everton look likely to sign Yassin Brahimi with their WAR CHEST.

Just a thought. Despite all the guff before, we've (so far) spent more than Everton in this window (unless I'm mistaken).

They only sold the overrated John Stones and kept Lukaku. If we had only sold Wanyama and kept Mane there would be no complaints from me - and I don't think Koeman would have left.

I honestly feel we are all getting carried away worrying about not getting in any more transfers. If Koeman was still in charge and we had been in the same situation, having secured the contract extensions that we have, plus added Boufal, Pied, Redmond, Hojbjerg and Mccarthy then we would all be pretty confident that we could kick on this season. Likewise if we had won our first 3 games comfortably then we wouldn't be panicking at this point.

It wasn't that long ago that people were calling for Koeman's head after a jittery run of results. It's a new manager, a new system with 3 new first team starters and therefore it will take a bit of time to all bed in nicely. Whilst it's frustrating to see the likes of Bony etc go to our arrivals I feel we should all relax, trust in Les and Claude and wait to see how things develop between now and January and then address it if need be.

It's not a huge risk as we were always going to struggle to finish above Liverpool, Chelsea and maybe Everton and West Ham, so we are realistically battling for a top 10 finish this season; whether we are 10th or 13th is fairly immaterial. Once January comes around we will have a much better understanding of what's needed - hopefully nothing at all!

Transfermarkt had it dead even entering today, but it looks like Everton will probably add more before the deadline.

Still shocked Everton hasn't gone after another keeper, though.

Ah, okay. So the strategy is: ten teams gonna be better than us, why bother fighting? I like it!

I like your post and I agree except for the part about Liverpool and Everton etc. I think over the last few seasons we've shown we can go 'toe to toe' with them. Maybe not financially, granted, but there has been something about the Southampton spirit amongst the club that has pulled us over that finish line either around or above those teams you mentioned (with the exception of Chelsea because they will be top 4 this season without a doubt).

I don't remember saying don't bother fighting and I don't remember saying that's our strategy.

Just stating my point of view, that this season with all the changes will be a bit of a leveller. I don't see the benefit in rushing in, spending silly money on last minute transfers when we're not at a stage yet to know exactly what's required. It's all very good throwing money at big transfers and getting very excited but it doesn't always work out (Gaston and Osvaldo to name a couple). I think Les and co are confident they've got a decent squad that can compete around the level where we are and are comfortable sticking at that until the new manager/ players have bedded in

We've dodged the Hal Robson-Kanu bullet. He's signing for WBA.

I agree with you completely but I feel they have underachieved of late. They have spent/ will be spending more money undoubtedly and there will come a time when we will probably have to wave them on through

Everton paying out £60m for Moussa Sissoko and Yannick Bolasie, yet having Enner Valencia and Maarten Stekelenburg at either end of the pitch.

    Hilarious stuff.

I wish Saints would make the final day more exciting for us. Sign someone in early August, but swear him to secrecy and make him train under cover of darkness...perhaps disguising him as a canteen lady during the day so he can actually eat. Then just as the Sky cameraman puts the covers on his camera....make him run into the training ground with a blanket over his head....before wheeling out our 30 goal a year striker just as the clock strikes the witching hour.

I read yesterday that Everton were going to sign Martina but Pied's injury stopped it.
