Question: If the window shut now, do you believe we have a squad capable to of pushing well on the main fronts this season?

We are all hopeful of something being pulled out the bag last minute but Saints seem to pride themselves on being pretty relaxed on deadline day. I can see a lot of people on here being disappointed tonight.

I will definitely be disappointed. I would have wanted us to bring in more players. I have already questioned why we handed out so many extensions. But even with that, I still think we had available money to spend.

I'm not questioning KL or the board's motives or competency though. I think they tried, but ultimately I feel like they didn't get it right. And that's just my feeling right now. It could change. Still a lot of time left in the season.

We still haven't seen Boufal play yet. If the board are right about him, that certainly changes things. Also, some of the academy players may be better than I know. So if they get some chances to play and look good-- even if it means we take a step back in the standings-- then I'll be happy that we didn't end up blocking them by bringing in more players.

Know nothing about him. Any good ??
Looked decent but also gets carded a lot. Not worth about £17m though.

Here in Portugal sports radio are saying Sporting are doing a Porto by selling Slimani and Adrien as a package like Porto did a couple of years ago with James and Moutinho. Sporting has to pay 20% of the selling fee of Slimani to an agent, so they packaged Adrien and Slimani and then say they sold Adrien for the €45M (release clause) and Slimani for €15M. Apparently Leicester paid 60M for both.

From a Portugese guy I know.

Sure. But why the lack of ambition when we were 3 points away from the promised land? We worked so hard to get there, only to seemingly be taking a big needless step backwards.
But success isn't necessarily in a straight line. Sixth last season could be followed by 8/9th this season, but that doesn't mean we will be 10th in 2017/18....we could just as easily be 4th. It's great that we have been better each season for years, but no need to shrug and give up because we fall back some places....especially as you can drop or climb places with nearly the same points. The club do not lack ambition, but sometimes other teams ambitions get in the way.

I think the contract extensions were smart moves as we ensure decent fees for our next sell off :)
I think Puel is being quite brave and saying to our existing players, "prove yourselves". The board will be happy if he gets one of our fringe players firing and also saving/making them a pretty penny.

The contract extensions don't mean a lot if the player decides to leave in a years time - we might get a larger fee but much of that is offset by the higher wages that player has earned over the preceding 12 months, not forgetting the fee the agent has received as part of the contract renegotiation.

If this is the extent of our transfer dealings this Summer then I think we have gone back on what we have achieved over the past three seasons.

I agree with your first point. If we had finished 8th/9th last season I would have been more than satisfied with that. I think most fans would have been. The problem our club has, obviously, is that since promotion we have had to sell our best players each summer. But it really felt in May, that for the first time, we wouldn't have to lose anyone because of the incredible season we'd had, and importantly, the form that we'd been on since January 2016. I didn't think for a minute that we would lose our manager and star player. Now, having seen that the club didn't want to spend this summer, well that kind of justifies Koeman's motivations for leaving.

I think the contract extensions are a good thing because we were signing players for three years and then facing losing them after two. Koeman remarked on the strangeness of this....he said, three years appears to be two in England. Yes, well he found out the truth of that! The five years shows that the players believe in Saints....they know it has made it harder for them to move on if they want to, but that has been offset by knowing they are also harder to get rid of. It must improve team spirit for most players to have stability.

Why don't we wait and see on the basis we can't do anything anyway.

The contract extensions are the only way we will keep our players for longer, which is something I've seen so many people, myself included, complain about. It is part of the next step for the club. We need to get to a point where we spend the summer adding players rather than replacing them, the only way to achieve this is grow as a club and hand out bigger and longer contracts.

Saints ain't nay gonna sign anyone else imo
All this speculation is just purely for sky's benefit.....deadline day bullshit.
They just love pampering the big clubs egos

I'll go with one more squad player signing as a loan or as a free transfer. But nothing very interesting. If we haven't heard anything about any big incoming deals by now, I can't see them happening this late in the game.
