Very interesting discussion but I think that people are forgetting that we have strengthened with Wanyama and Janssen early in the window. If Son and Njie stay (looking likely) then in effect they will be like two now players as both had badly injury affected seasons last year.
Up until his injury v man city at the lane Son looked excellent and Njie never really got going.
At the beginning of the window many said Vorm should be replaced but now he's showing the form we hoped he would so maybe the club are seeing that in other players behind the scenes.
Finally, a new stadium will affect us financially. Maybe the reason that we have broken even or made a profit on the past transfer windows is to ensure we can pay for the stadium and still be in with a shout of 4th.
But then again none of that explains Zaha...but like with Berahino, I praise the Lord for stroppy chairman of other clubs

Don't worry, NSIS, I made a discovery that Levy is fighting tooth and nail to get a certain deal done.

You need to discount such rumours or you will miscount the number of signings we expect and end up discombobulated and drinking Pisco sour

SSN are reporting that we're going for sissoko and we've entered a bid.

Thus here we go again with everything CK said a few posts back. It's absolutely pathetic how we behave.

Yup. Wrong player at the wrong time and no doubt at the wrong price. Screw that cockerel, our mascot should be a groundhog holding a humble pie.

For someone who is so financially astute, it baffles me why levy doesn't consider these factors you mention as risks to the investment.
It's like we enjoy signing square pegs for round holes!

You've not read my post at all. Re-read it and tell me where I say anything like that. Good players are available at sensible prices. We do well in attracting some of them but we will leave gaps to fill and then try to do it when nobody wants to sell such players, so we end up with poor buys or Kane up front on his own (and Son, Chadli, N'Jie and Tom Carroll cannot play up there). It's yesterday's thinking and it doesn't work any more. We didn't pull off VDV through fantastic negotiating, Madrid were desperate to dump him and rang Levy. It fell in our lap and was so good a deal, even we didn't pass it up.

I'm advocating buying what we want/need and can afford earlier, rather than wasting money on making last minute panic buys as we seem to want to do. I'm pretty sure we bought N'Jie and Son in the same blind panic as we acquired Fraser 'Bloody' Campbell. When all is said and done, it's about the squad and to my mind, I'd rather get someone in that we've had chance to scout properly because we've a poor record of doing this last minute nonsense, unless we're counting Ryan Nelsen and Gregorsz Raziak as potential 'Legends' members? Buying last minute is dumb and getting dumber.

When considering some of the prices being banded about for average-to-good players, £16m for Sissoko is pretty decent business, especially as we sold Mason for just £3m less and I'd say Sissoko is a significantly better player. Ironically, he's probably one of the closest things we can get to Dembele as well, I know he's played RW for Newcastle a lot but ultimately I think his best role is in the centre as a box-to-box player.

Sissoko is actually one of the most similar players to Dembele in the world. What's so underwhelming about this bid is that he hasn't really done much for three years yet sees himself as the heir to Vieira, which is reflected in the fact that our bid is half of what Newcastle want for him. I wonder what the point of it all is. Does Levy think that just because they got relegated, Newcastle will simply sell to the highest bidder. Does he think that this saves face for yet another window? It'll end one of two ways : either we'll pay massively over tbe odds for an average player, or we'll be publicly schooled by the same club who beat us 5-1 on their way to the basement. Either way, it is thoroughly humiliating and totally unnecessary. It has been public knowledge since June that Newcastle will listen to offers. And here we are , the 'better late than never' brigade, giving the plonkers on Talk sport something to laugh at.

    It appears so....

I'm not sure he's the wrong player at the wrong time. I also doubt Levy will pay the wrong price. I figure Sissoko is sulking and wants out of Newcastle. Looks like a repeat of the Dempsey Fulham situation.

If we can get him at the right price, let's face it Levy doesn't do expensive panic buys, I think he can do a job of covering for Dembele in midfield. Poch can coach the inconsistencies out of him. I have always thought that he is a player with the right combination of attributes that we can use, but don't often get. Tough, strong and can play. Solid buy in my opinion. Would have been nice to have at younger age (like when Newcastle got him), but good to have in squad. Upgrade on Mason and Bentaleb.

I reckon Newcastle are about to get Levy'd.

I wouldn't object to loaning him whilst Newcastle are scrapping it out in the Championship. If he shapes up, we can have agreed a clause to pay a decent fee for him. If not, the Geordies can have him back. Paying £20m+ for him sets my teeth on edge as he is the archetypal 'Spursy' player.
