He's tall, he's strong, he's a good leaper, and he's a decent finisher. And while he's no sprinter, he is not a complete lump. But like many players of that ilk, he's not versatile...set the system up to take advantage of their skills, and they will be useful. Try to shoehorn them into a setup that doesn't cater to their strengths, and he'll be pretty useless.

Throw in that half of his goals are pens, which we don't get given many of, and most of his 'assists' are pinball style miscontrols that Dutch defences couldn't clear before somebody else benefitted, and he doesn't exactly look the finished article. Still, if he's 21 and the fee/wages are cheap then fine. He doesn't look to be miles better than Olafela Olumela (sp?) though.

Better at actually winning the ball in the air. May also be more aware of his limitations, heh.

From the above comments, he's not a prolific goal scorer, lacks pace, cannot pass or hold the ball up - is that about the summation - or am I missing something obvious - other than he's cheap?

All sounds a little last minute desperation if true... what does this guy offer more than Austin; which in itself is hardly a benchmark you want to reference someone too... not impressed by this rumour.

Go back to a system with tricky wingers and 2v1s in wide areas and he could score some goals off crosses. Whether he'd score more than Austin in the same situations, I don't know.

He's a pretty prosaic option, definitely. Given the choice, I'd take another creative player and hope that our bushel of flair could carve chances out for the strikers we do have.

Sorry Schad - I was in the process of editing when you made your comments - sincere apologies. I agree with your sentiment - we lack enough creative players - if we want to play a 'lump' up front we have Austin. I would keep Jay and get another creative player instead of this purchase.

Get him in, the more tall people we can throw on at the end of the game to rescue a point the better. ;)

Well if the comments on this thread are to be believed, all we need to do is eliminate him from any approach play, make sure he isn't required to take a touch, make sure the ball is in the air no more than five yards out, that he's unmarked but otherwise surrounded by teammates pinball fashion and we have a great signing on our hands.

Feel like we've got Heller's song sorted.

    Now what about Roccardo Saponara?

He has strengths, but he also has limitations; we got the most out of Pelle because we catered to the strengths, but if we were using him in the diamond and asking him to split wide most of the time with no close support, I think we'd all agree that he would be a less-than-ideal option. Same with Haller.

I imagine Pelle was more like Ronaldo (either one) when he was 22.

Cue innuendo ! - we could call him Helmet Haller (if under 50 yrs old, Helmut Haller played in `66 WCF).
    Or maybe not.

I am willing to believe that if we are interested he does have some redeeming features. And he's young enough to improve.

Accepting that players have limitations is not being negative. Most players have limitations...it's why they're available to us on deadline day for ~10m, rather than being sold to Bayern for 40m in early June. We can pretend that they're all flawless do-everything types who can slot easily into whatever setup or position that we please, or we can figure out how to get the most out of their skillsets.
