Surely Winks didn't play enough to be able to say this? He looked neat and tidy in pre-season but then again so did Darren Bent. In Carroll, I believe that we have a player who 'gets' the system, knows his game's strengths and weaknesses very well, and contributes accordingly. The problem is that he simply isn't good enough for that contribution to match the level we're aiming for. As for Onomah, I'd put him somewhere between the two; I don't think he or Poch knows his strongest postion yet, but he does look very comfortable and capable on the ball.

To my mind, there are certain things that happen at Spurs that we then blindly assume will happen again: signing VDV in the 11th hour, picking up Dier and Alli for a bargain, the academy bringing through a player of Kane's ability. All of these things could happen again, but the likelihood is that, as we know, for every VDV there are a dozen Moutinho and Berahino's, for ever Alli there are all the players we're getting rid of after less than 2 years at the club, for every Kane there are two dozen McEvoys. In short, we are very, very bad at being sensible.

I was gonna put Winks in that group of 4, but didn't because Carroll has played more and at present, is more established. However, I totally agree with you. Winks has impressed me more than any of those 4, and i've seen about 45 mins of football from him! <laugh>
We must remember though, as good as he looks so far, that he's a youngster who needs breaking in slowly this season, not dumped in a pressure situation.

As I said, I don't know enough about Hakan, but like you say, perhaps a formation that's slightly tinkered could make it work? Maybe 1 holding player and 4 across the "3", instead? - or maybe it'd just be good to have him competing with the 3? after all, Eriksen needs a kick up the arse at the moment and there's currently no subs who look like displacing the current "3". They need some pressure on them, it's healthy competition.

Finding a player just like Dembele isn't going to happen. But there are players out there in there own right that pull the strings and make a huge difference. Take Modric who is completely different, yet was just as sorely missed when he didn't play. There must be someone out there who has that spark about them. - Maybe Coric is that player, maybe Tielemens? HBIC will know, I'm sure. But that's the sort of player that I'd like us to be going for. Not premier league cast off's like Sissoko and Zaha for astronomical prices who we already know are distinctly average.

According to Sky, they are interested in Wilshire as well. Some people aren't happy unless they've got problems.

If the on-pitch procurement of Palace merged with stadium poncing of the Spanners,
that is a club that could run all season with just 50 quid of its own money.

Yeah I'm a fan of Winks, having seen him a bit for the U21s and then in pre-season, I'm convinced he has a future here with us and would like to gradually be involved more and more.

Going with four attacking mids while Dembele is out would be tantalising to watch, it'd be Barca-esque, with Dier/ Wanyama being Busquets, Eriksen and Hakan/ New player as Iniesta and Rakitic while Lamela and Alli get the superstar roles in Messi and Neymar. We probably wouldn't pull it off as well as the Catalans but **** me it'd make for an interesting match with likely goal galore.

I think the best shot we have in getting Dembele cover/ competition is literally hoping we find another Alli, just in this sense, another Dembele! A complete unknown who can become a superstar.

    According to Sky sources:

Tottenham's interest in Crystal Palace midfielder Wilfried Zaha is over. We understand that Tottenham did NOT place a second bid for £18m as has been widely reported.

    According to the Guardian:

Tottenham have returned with a bid of £21m for Zaha. Steve Parish, Palace's chairman, insisted however last week any future bids for the former Manchester United winger would be swiftly rejected.

"We had a bid from Spurs but £12m – it's ridiculous. I can't imagine that they're serious," Parish told talkSPORT.

"There is no chance whatsoever of Wilfried Zaha leaving the club in this transfer window. I can absolutely reassure every Palace fan he is an integral part of our plans. We've told Spurs that there is really no point bidding for him because he is going nowhere - 100% guaranteed."

    According to Brian:

There is 0% chance of us signing this bloke for less than our record transfer fee. There would then be a 100% chance of him being less successful than Soldado, Paulinho and Chiriches combined, if we did. I predict we will go back in for him approximately 11 minutes before the deadline closes with a bid of £5.75, Tom Carroll and some of the old seating from WHL when we demolish it.

On the contrary we have a very sensible policy and an extraordinarily good outcome. We paid a lot less for our squad than it is currently worth which is why we can qualify for the CL when three of the moneybags clubs couldn't.

Despite this most of you lot want us to do what is failing for those clubs and waste millions on over-rated dross like Benteke and Remy.

    According to SoS?:
Spurs are close to completing the loan deal of Real Madrid attacking midfielder, Isco Alarcon. The Spaniard, thought to be extremely keen on a move to Spurs due to a certain forum posters' enthusiasm at his signing, is due in London within the next 24 hours to undergo a medical and complete his move. The deal, which has an option to make the move permanent for a fee believed to be £5m plus Argentina national defender, Federico Fazio, should be the signing of the summer.

Sort of sad to see him go, but at least he's joining Spurs Ginger B, I guess.
Good luck to him and I hope that he has a good career, except when he's playing against us, of course.

Just noticed that it says club record fee. Abel Hernandez was £10m, so it's more than that.
Are we actually going to spend any of it at any point? Probably not, eh?
