Having decided to sell all of our second string midfielders and those who can play in the 3, the questions is WTF is going on?

We've seen some bloody weird transfer windows over the years. We all have memories of 'The Ramos Summer', where, having sold Defoe in the January, we then sold Keane and Berbatov to leave us with Bent and Frazier 'Bloody' Campbell up front. That was a shocker. It was the year Commolli purchased David Bentley and Dos Santos and Hilarious Gomes. Happy, carefree yesterdays. From a distance it's almost funny.

There was 'The Beatles Summer' where another Director of Football invested the tasty sum of £100m in a collection of players who were, with a couple of exceptions, just not that good. The Chiriches purchase being my particular favourite. Soldado was too expensive for me to see the funny side.

So, what are we up to now? There are a few options:

    • Mrs Levy has gone mad on the bathrooms at the new stadium and this stuff doesn't pay for itself.
    • Joe Lewis's new yacht is costing more, given the collapse of Sterling and it was either a Lucian Freud, Damien Hirst or our bench;
    • Gareth Bale's been on the blower and he's done with winning the CL and is bringing Isco and Kroos with him and we need the need the space on the bench;
    • We're swapping Tom Carroll for a magic compound developed by a mad Russian scientist. This stuff eliminates tiredness and prevents injury. Unfortunately, Tom is to be used in medical experimentation to see if a second puberty can be induced if the first one failed to work.
    • We're being paid a lot of money to see how many games it takes to exhaust a group of footballers to the point where we have to play the U17's in the CL; or
    • It's just Levy. It's what he does.

    Post of the day ^

Your reference to the happy-go-lucky days of Commoli where we couldn't quite believe we'd qualified for Europe through our own merit rather than via the Fair Play Award did make me chuckle. From a safe distance, I guess Oasis were right when they said 'don't look back in anger'.

But the reference to the hack-job of Balegate is still too fresh in the memory. With Chadli on his way, only 2 of the original 7 Beatles remain at the club 3 years on, and only one of those (Eriksen) is now worth significantly more than what we paid for him (I reckon Lamela has broken even - just).

That is a lamentably pathetic ROI.

I think the club is working on something big. Could be setting myself up for disappointment here but something just seems fishy at the fact we're supposedly allowing a good few to go all of a sudden and I feel that's down to one or two players that'll be coming in (aside from GNK) who are going to somewhat shake things up.

Aidan Magee said he knows we have interest in Isco but feels it's too late to get such a big deal done with little time left, UNLESS we'd been working on it for sometime without the news getting to the media. A number of ITK's (I laugh at them as much as the next guy so I appreciate it shouldn't be taken as gospel) have said that the club was working on something that would be like a VDV type deal, no one mentioned a name but they all said it'd excite fans, this has been said throughout different forums and social media platforms for a good few weeks, maybe Isco is that guy, maybe it's someone else, maybe they're all just trying to make educated guesses so that IF a big player comes in they'll take credit for the "info" whereas if no one comes it'll be the "we tried but couldn't get it over the line" excuse but I am beginning to believe the club has something up it's sleeve if we are indeed allowing a bunch of guys to go.

The Ramos transfer window was so painful that I have scrubbed it from history. I got some extra work back then and we saved some of the money but we also got to book some spurs matches at the beginning of that season.

Went to the Villa (lost 2-1), Hull (lost 1 nil), Wigan (drew nil nil) and a uefa match against Wislow Krakov I think (won 1 nil).
The goal against Villa came off Darren Bent's arse when he failed to get out of the way of a shot!
It was some of the worse football we'd seen at the lane since my first match in 81.

Showed what a **** decision it was to get rid of Martin Jol...funnily enough it was rectified by get an English version of him when they got Redknapp.

Don't laugh too loudly at me but that's what I thought when we were selling Berbatov. We all knew he was going so I figured we were ****ing united around while we were getting in a replacement ... I actually thought we were trying to get one of their players (like Carrick) as part of the deal...butboy was I wrong <doh>

Getting a bit concerned at the rumours now, but holding it together due to the fact that the number of players we are linked with doesn't even resemble the number of players we sign. So similarly linked players out might be the same.
If every current rumour comes true then we're screwed!

I think this every single window and it kills me a little bit inside when it doesn't happen.

VDV was the exception that proves the rule, nothing more.

I admire your optimism mate, but i can't remember the last time a deal was just announced and no one in the media got wind of it. Everything seems to get out these days, why would it be any different with Spurs?

He's retired, thankfully. That does mean that he's technically out of contract, though... <whistle>

I think that we'll sell Mason, Chadli and N'Jie and sign N'Koudou and that'll be it.
Son doesn't appear to know anything about a possible deal with Wolfsburg, but I suppose that's still one that could happen.
I can't see us signing anyone significant and that's a big mistake.

Pochettino may have been joking when he said that we're nothing without Dembele, but like a lot of jokes, it's concealing a truth.
Our system simply doesn't work properly when he's not playing.
That's not because our other players are ****, but because none of them play in that role and the system requires it.
Failing to address this is stupid and it will mean that we won't move on this season.

    Spot on.
Infact, with other clubs strengthening their teams and managerial personnel, it's going to make things extremely difficult for us.

That's the nature of the Premier League. Move forward or die.

We were very, very lucky last term with injuries. Dembele has a history of dodgy groins and hamstrings yet was miraculously healthy most of last season. All it took were a couple of suspensions at the end to screw everything up - we were literally unrecognisable and the extent to which our soft underbelly was exposed was frankly frightening.

We are currently in a very similar position to where we were under Harry, just without the world class players who could turn a game with a moment of brilliance: A very strong, nicely balanced starting XI with no more than 3-4 peripheral players who can actually come in and do a job without the whole deck collapsing.

This. We'll make some daft attempt to sign someone who has just signed a new contract and has 3rd party ownership issues on deadline day but I get the feeling that this is another missed opportunity.

The one thing that could happen is we buy/loan Mangala from Citeh. That's totally bonkers and very us.

I think that we've got decent cover in a number of positions, including most of the defensive ones.
Davies, Trippier, Wimmer, Vorm, Wanyama, Janssen and probably some of the youth players are all fine.
We can pick up suspensions and injuries and we'll cope pretty well.
Wimmer for Vertonghen was probably the best example last season.

The issue is that we don't have any cover at all in some places, which is just bizarre.
A case could be made for Onomah in Dembele's place, as that's where he played most of his youth football, IIRC.
It's simply not happening in the first team, though. He gets picked further forward and looks a bit lost, for the most part.

I don't even think we'll sign N'Koudou. Knowing us, we'll end up with Njie on loan at Marseille, who will also receive £12m from us for the privilege of keeping N'Koudou in France.

The Berba window was a real catastrophe for the club, quite possibly the worst transfer window I can remember for Spurs. Losing JD in the January beforehand and then Keane and Berba in that summer window was just heartbreaking. I'd pray to any footballing god that we're never left with a scenario like that again.

Nah I know it's a long shot but I can't help myself from thinking the club is working on something. Like I said I'm probably setting myself up for disappointment but while there's time, I'll try and believe <laugh>.

I went through this list yesterday. To my mind, the only players I fully trust to come in without near-total collapse to the system are:

Vorm (based on his sweeper-keeper heroics against Pool)
    Davies
    Wimmer
    Wanyama
    Janssen

That isn't even enough to fill a bench.

I think that others have performed decently, but two of them seem to be heading for the exit door.
Mason did well for a season in a deeper role, despite playing further forward for most of his career.
Chadli also got plenty of goals and assists, though his defending leaves a lot to be desired.

I'd be fine with Trippier, Carroll (in the three, but not the two) or Son and some of our kids look promising, but it's not enough.
We've qualified for a tougher European competition this season and we appear to be weakening our squad.
    That's just ludicrous.
