Was similar to the two '99 crashes in the BAR cars, so probably a few years before that. I'd suggest any time prior to Hakkinen's crash at Adelaide in '95 - after that was when they started protecting the head of the driver more carefully with raised cockpit sides etc. Looking at races prior to that point it's really visibly prominent just how unprotected the driver seems comparatively to now.
Yeah, I was thinking along broadly similar lines. Pre-Senna, definitely. Also, Mark Webber drinking out of Daniel Ricciardo's boot has to be the most Australian thing that's ever happened on an F1 podium.

Just watched that footage again and it's comically worse quality than the original footage. Youtube's downgraded it from HD to 360p and I can't find a way to avoid that. Vin

Am curious whether F1 could set up the grid in reverse order of seasonal standings (as they do in some amateur racing series) and still end up with the same podium finishers most of the time. Guess you would, though with a few more incidents along the way.
