    Nope the actual terms of the referendum as laid out by parliament was that it is advisory.

    Whether or not the government and public have now decided to treat it as binding is irrelevant to the original terms under which it was drawn up.

    s1: "A referendum is to be held on whether the United Kingdom should remain a member of the European Union."
    That seems pretty clear to me.

    I don't know the wording, but my understanding is that the Government were/are not bound by the referendum result, so in that respect it's advisory.

    Yes it is. As it attaches no legislation to the decision it is therefore purely advisory.

    If you want an example of a binding referendum then look at the electoral change one that bound the government to PR if the vote w as soon in favor.

    I've seen a number of answers to that.

    The one that I think fits best was as a lever for the negotiations Cameron had with the EU. He went all in, the EU called. We're just waiting to see what the cars are when they're turned over.
