There's where we want to be and realistically where we are. Sixth last season in a big league is pretty good going. Cedric talks of how pleased he feels to be wanted and to know the club have confidence in him. It must do a lot for team spirit to feel that they are all on long contracts....gives them an investment in the club and their fellow players.
I'd usually agree with the first point, but Cedric has done nothing in a Southampton shirt to earn a new deal and presumably a pay rise. People like Davis and Fonte have earned these types of contracts. Cedric signed a 4 year deal last summer and was our 2nd best right back in terms of performance. Of course we're not super duper in every position, but right back is our glaring weakness currently. Cedric has a lot of improving to do.
Very hard to disagree with any of the points made, defensively he looks pretty awful and is probably the 3rd best RB currently on our books, but I think he is potentially the best RB on the books? I just hope for a major improvement this season.
I thought Cedric's stats, last season, had him down as the best RB in the Premier League. Don't know what it was based on, but maybe he ain't as bad as you think?
Then the stats need ignoring. We should be selling him while the stock is high and buying a decent right back instead. Martina was better than him last season yet we are (were) looking to offload him cheaply. Does not make sense to me. He would have been worth more now than in a year's time new contract or not.
Good news really, not sure he deserved it as much as the others mind, but still good news nonetheless!
Cedric has a lot of potential. No reason to try to offload him when we are short at that position and his value is not particularly high. But there's no real reason to give him an extension, either. If we are just bumping payroll and giving raises to everyone, why not Clasie or Romeu?
