Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has held out the prospect of his reshaped squad challenging for the Premier League title in the season ahead, brushing away the suggestion of the club's owner, John W Henry, that a Champions League place is the more realistic target for next May. It was almost exactly a year to the day that the then new manager Roy Hodgson sat down publicly with three recruits of his own â Joe Cole, Milan Jovanovic and Danny Wilson â to discuss his own hopes for the season. Although Hodgson, for all his unpopularity in some quarters at Anfield, was far more willing to engage in press conversation, Dalglish's refusal to dismiss a title tilt offered a striking point of contrast with his predecessor. It was when Cole, in last year's press conference, suggested that the title should be an aspiration that Hodgson applied one of his customary cold doses of realism. "You've done a great job of building us up," Hodgson shot back. "We've gone from seventh place [last season] to winning the League. We've not spoken about the Champions League yet. That might take a year, I suppose. We've been elevated as high as Jupiter â which is the highest?" With this is mind does Kenny now have to deliver that 19th title or risk losing his job? i think its now do or die, a challenge for 4th in my opinion was realistic but for the title i dont think so but hey who am i.
Kenny wouldn't be doing his job if he wasn't aiming for the league at this point. There may come a time in the season when that aim changes but that time is not now. I believe we can win the league, I may be proven wrong but i'll still support my team and believe we can win it agin next year.
You conveniently missed out the bit when Kenny said that Henry was the best owner in the league who was very supportive.
LFC-009 that wouldnt fit in line with the article, yes i saw that but this is with reference to where both parties think the club can finish thanks for the normal comments though much appreciated guys.
Well that was a long diatribe to reach your final statement! Your quite right (for a change) when you say "but hey who am i". With the kind of deliberately tortuous logic that you have employed, I may be able to help you answer that question. You are a very sad person to spend the time and effort constructing this post with the sole intention of annoying other posters. It is pointless and childish. It is not clever. It could well be that you actually have a poor opinion of your own self-worth. Sad mate - seek help - get a life!
4th is minimum by the new owners standards, if Kenny wants to push his players for higher than that surely its a good thing.Anyways by adding the pressure early it will sort the men from the boys in the team.As for Hodgson he had the wrong attitude when he took over, thats all that needs to be said.
Foredeckdave i think you assume wrong, and it literally took me 10 seconds to cut and paste from the independant, its a question as to whether the fans also think a title challenge is realistic.
Seems like someone who is intent on getting liverpool fans saying 'Next Year is our Year' by manipulating some comments made by Kenny and the owners.Optimism in mind a title challenge would be nice however as proven by last season anything can happen with the teams at the top...
Dissembler. It's not the physical construction of the post that I was refering to it was the cognitive process and intent. We see the same processes used by political spin-doctors and PR agents and having met many of them I would offer both you and them the same advice. Logically if you wanted an answer to the question "do fans think a title challenge is realistic" then it can be simply put without the rest of mis-association included in your post. Hence, my charge not only stands but is proven.
This is why expat usually ignores my posts, because I don't give the answer he wants. Or maybe he just doesn't like me!
Foredeckdave i think it is u acting like the politician, answering everything else but the question at hand. if i had simply put is this year your year, or dso you think u can win the league, its pretty certain that not only the article being closed down but also a myriad of comments suggesting so, so far its you and one other person who believes this to be a wind up when its clearly not, ive even made an extra effort to appreciate proper comments by others.
Ex. Alright, I've got a few minutes so I'll treat it like a serious question ( though I'll probably regret it later). This has been done to death over the last few weeks. We would expect everyone associated with the club to aim for the top, fully aware that it might not be achievable. Aim for the top and if you fall a bit short, you're still up there somewhere. Woy's lack of ambition let himself and everyone else down. If you are happy with mediocrity, that's what you'll get. That's why he does a good job saving struggling teams but will never make it to the top.
So, have you got these quotes that Kenny said we're expected to challenge for a title? No, I don't expect you do.
saintanton a well reasoned answer thanks. i have no problem with aspiration it can only be a good thing like yourself, i understand liverpool are tarred with the this year is our year tag by rival fans and you always get asked this question, however in light of kennys comments yesterday it felt appropriate.
