Article: Where have all the promises gone? | Football, Arsenal

Discussion in 'Arsenal' started by Robin van Bergkamp, Aug 4, 2011.

  1. A week is a long time in politics. At times it seems that way in football too.

So far this week we were possibly expecting Juan Mata but that looks quite unlikely now. We were also looking at welcome Phil Jagielka but things appear to have changed in that department. Instead we have the consolation of the contract extension of a youngster, Kyle Bartley. Then there is the continuing transfer sagas of Cesc and Nasri. In fact these two tales have become so long they are almost approaching epic proportions. It didn't seem that long ago when we were promised funds, early and speedy activity in the transfer market. Perhaps too the management of this club hold a similar view to politicians that a week is a long time. For the fan though, things are certainly taking a long time and August could be a long month if nothing is done swiftly.

Why does this club always take such a long time to do anything and when they do it, leave everything to the last minute? I'm beginning to think again of my once held belief that Arsene is not the only one with a hand in this. Perhaps Mr Gazidis should stand up and face the fans. We really would welcome some answers please if it isn't too much trouble.

It'd be nice knowing we have a new defender - might make the next few weeks go by quicker. I swear all I do at the moment is refresh every football-related website, in hope of some new miraculous signing.

I think the trouble is that teams like City and Chelsea have skewed the market to such an extent, that deals done early in the window are only those that nobody else can afford. Everyone else is left to play hard ball in the final throes to get a realistic deal.

The transfer window still has three weeks to run and we all know that most deals are done in the last couple of days.

You make it sound so ' what's all the fuss ' but the season starts next week and I feel that for the first time in years, we appear so woefully under prepared. Given that we have stiff opposition coming up I would have thought that we would be all ready to go.

Perhaps I should wait another long week.....

Whatever happens we'll still be in four competitions by the end of August and there'll be 35 league games left. Yes the first month can set the tone for the season but only if we let it. We shouldn't put so much pressure on the first few games and a qualifying tie which we should win. Besides, it's not starting the season we have a problem with lately!

I find excessive negativity really annoying but there is nothing wrong with any of what RVB is saying. Wenger has a lot of questions to answer.

We ended last season in appalling form. We seem to have taken that form into the pre-season games. If we take that form into the new season we are f#@%ed!

The good news is that by the end of August we'll know whether or not Wenger has done his job properly or not. We will either be in the CL and have at least 6 out of 9 points in the EPL or we'll be out of the CL and/or stuck on 3 or less points in the EPL.

If it is the later and Wenger hasn't signed a centre back by the end of the window then I want him sacked!!!

I think the next month is going to be a difficult chapter in our club's history. And I guess that it's kind of up to us to get the club through that. I would have liked Wenger to have made all the signings by now and for us to be ripping up preseason but I guess that just seems unlikely. However, we can still boost the club via our support (and not booing). Squillaci is our iron man, Nasri named his son "Ash" after Arsenal's stadium, Fabregas got a tattoo depicting Anfield '89 on his back, Chamakh moves like an iceskater and shoots like a sniper. You get the picture. That's what we have to do, otherwise all we'll do is moan about our doom.

I won't call for his head then because by some miracle we could still do well. But if by the end of the season we are in a mess then I will be in favour of sacking him.
