Two extremely good players on long term deals. Can we expect loyalty from them if we are not showing ambition and competing in the league, that would seem unfair. There's no links to this two, but beedy eyes are watching, clubs want us to fail so they can take advantage.

Although at the start of the season our purchases are always of no interest to the big clubs, they only want them once we've developed them, so it may only be VVD now, but you may be adding Pierre and Nathan after a few more games and there's also Ryan. Not that I want to encourage the selling and if we get a high league position and keep everyone than that has its own advantages as we don't need to invest so much. Although obviously finishing high tends to mean some will be plucked from us.

We need to succeed by teamwork with noone playing so well as to be noticed :emoticon-0105-wink:
It is interesting that Dusan achieves what he does for us but never gets a mention in the rumours. I know he's no Sadio but still ...

I was going to, but feared being trampled in the rush of others saying it.

I think the club will call it "a revaluation of our investment strategy"

Because we have probably been priced out of signing players domestically now. I agree that our recruitment from UK teams has been very good, but now with the extra money and the even larger premium on domestic players it appears we are looking overseas.

I wasn't aware we were failing on either front. Exactly the same things were being said every summer for the past X years of continual improvement. I'm by no means saying we'll improve again this year but I don't see that, out of the blue, Saints are suddenly choosing not to show ambition.

I did mention in my post that if none of the signings this summer work out (ie Redmond and Hojbjerg) then we would have only VVD really who the top teams may want. Bertrand is another possibility.

You'll be surprised to know that I have not just time jumped from 2021. <doh>
But, letting Fonte & Jay go on the last day of the window may well cause us problems.
It might not happen, we are speculating, if it does happen it may well cause trouble, if it doesn't happen it may well all be rosey.
    Meltdown not engaged.

We certainly are failing in the ambition stakes. When Rupert Lower cut back on spending we went down and and then bust. When the Liebherrs do it it is a long term plan. It isn't. However, a few million well spent will turn that around and stop this feeling like the worst transfer window ever.

Be a shame if Jay goes but hopefully it is just to get him a regular season under his belt. I fear though, that his time at Saints is over, you don't really loan senior players to PL teams with a view of keeping them after. I'm hoping this is slightly different circumstances because of his injury, but I doubt it.

Sorry Magic, I cant agree witht he 'priced out of the UK market'.

There is no evidence whatsoever of this, and you may be basing this on the not spending £32m on Benteke, or similar.

We historically buy in the good talent, mature them and sell 'em on. Benteke doesnt fit that bracket (I know you havent suggested him) he is highly unlikely to make money for Palace on his next move.

We are still likely to go for young talent, either English or based in the UK, just like young Redmond. Who we purchased from the UK market.

Sorry, so you did. But seriously, you don't think Hojbjerg is going to be very very good???

I'm leaving this thread now as it is starting to get a bit SaintsWebby (Not you SM)

Yeh that's how I see it also. It could be a test-drive for his new club, if he plays well they can buy him and if not they can return him but he isn't worth the risk because he hasn't shown that he's a Premier League player again.

It's also obvious we need a few in, and the board have earned the benefit of the doubt from our success over the last few seasons, they haven't suddenly changed the business plan, we're used to this. I'd be shocked if we didn't bring more first team quality in before the end of the window.

Contract extensions aside (because they can be done at any time of year) I feel it has been an underwhelming window. Our signings haven't been "wow" signings, which is fine, we've had success with similar signings before, but I can see why many are disappointed. Personally, I'm happy to wait it out till the window closes and hopefully look at a much improved squad going into September.

    We shall see.
