To be fair, all recent sales that make the most of assets and that should be applauded, and pretty much all were due to players wanting to go or having short lifes remaining on contracts.

My belief is Mane should have gone for £40m plus add-ons, so they got that one a little light. Osvaldo and Gaston we just basically got totally wrong, but we dont often get 'em wrong.

I do have a nagging concern regarding quality and quantity just now, am sure this will be addressed and if our replacements aren't here in time, those deals may not end up happening with Fonte.

If we come out of weaker, then that is a rightly voiceable concern, and like a couple of others on here have suggested we are playing a potentially dangerous strategy with so many changes every year. Im not bothered about the PR aspect of it being a little embarrassing, there is a risk we get it wrong and it costs our place in the EPL.

 

Gaston, Osvaldo, Forren, Juanmi, Mayuka. We do get it wrong reasonably often, Mane and Lovren were big successes from clubs overseas but most of the others have been average-good (Pelle, Tadic) or poor (see above). We really aren't some super club when it comes to recruitment, good yes but we get it wrong pretty regularly aswell.

 

Fair point, I didnt include Juanmi or Mayuka as they were so low cost, it didnt really cost us huge in transfer/wages in the grand scheme.

I would suggest Pelle and Tadic have been big successes and not average/good.

How many teams have a player with as many goals/assists as Tadic - hardly any. Pelle also had a good strike rate, whilst being frustrating cant really be judged as being average-good - I'm sure Fats would still suggest Pelle was a success...

 

We're better than most, but every club gets some wrong. Therein lies the concern; if you're skimming off several of the best players every year, some of the replacements will be merely okay, and some will flop. Perhaps with the new deals next summer will be different, but it'll take a very firm approach from the board.

 

Gaston and Osvaldo were Cortese presents though.

Forren got fat drinking.

Juanmi just never settled.

Mayuka I have heard he was a Cortese buy/ but also been told he wasn't. So just a mistake I guess.

We will be completely fine. I will be beyond gutted, but, even if it's true, we are amazing at spotting/scouting/signing Centre Back's!

 

Not really bothered about the reasons players didn't perform to expectation, just shows the risks when signing anyone. I quite like our philosophy and am very interested to see how far it can get us, but the main issue is that all it takes is one bad window and we are set back quite a few seasons. If, say, none of the signings made this summer turn out that great then (assuming Fonte and J-Rod go) we have one player (VVD) who the big teams would probably want and our squad is looking pretty average. Our whole philosophy is built on having a couple of players each year to sell on to the big clubs for large sums and reinvesting to make the overall squad stronger. If we have no players to sell then the whole model falls down.

Why restrict it to signings from 'foreign' leagues? As we know Davis, Forster, VVD, Wanyama, Bertrand, Clyne, Jay and Alderweireld were all great signings.
