JC - time for another prayer? We need to pray that Maynard will call up Sven tomorrow and accept 25k a week for four years?

I do have faith in Sven, but I can't ignore my gut feelling about this particular issue.

He's got everything right to this point imo, but I have concerns about the striking situation.

There's no point being over-confident about our chances no matter who we've got out on the pitch.

I worry that we could have done better than Long, that's all.

I agree that we could have done better.

But Sven seems to want players who are proven in England and only he and Maynard are left out of the strikers in this league.

If we really wanted Maynard we would have bid £5.5-6m for him.

If this is a ploy I'm not sure I understand it...

I would be happy with Maynard or Long. If we got promoted the price we pay will have paid for either of them would be seen as bargain. One good season in the PL and their value would double or triple given their ages.

One thing I would say about why Long seems to command a higher transfer fee than Maynard even though they both have 1 year left on their contract is that Long has proven he can score goals in the season just gone whereas Maynard goalscoring feat was the season before last. If Maynard could have repeated that feat last season then there is no doubt his value would have been higher, instead his injury knocked a considerable sum of his true value.

Rumours we have not actually bid, just called their ticket office and asked if he is still at the club!

Maybe Sven rates Long higher but only went for Maynard first because he would have been cheaper but now thinks it's worth spending the extra money to get the better player? Or I agree it could be a ploy to show Bristol City we have other options and they could lose their only potential buyer if they don't act soon and with Maynard not rushing to sign a contract, it could worry them because his value is only going to decrease from now.

they are only basing that on what Sven said on the forum

"Long is one on the list but he may end up in the Premier League"

Sven has done Long a favour there by giving him premiership kudos, i still think he would come here if a bid was accepted, as no prem league club sofar has shown an interest.

Yes. Because we are in need of a striker doesnt mean he wont be fantastic. The level of strikers like connoly fryatt hume vassel howard have done well but they are div 1 players.
Maybe a LONG term plan is what we need no?
Mcshefry should be signed no doubt.. I wouldnt be surprised if its shaun wrightp.

    Having heard McDermott on talkSh*te last night, I think he is trying to start a bidding war;

"I'm amazed we have had no bids from anyone for him"

I.e. "Hurry up guys or Leicester might nick him"

Like Maynard, PL interest in Long doesn't seem to have gone anywhere near serious with only a pish poor £3m bid from WBA rejected.

West Brom wont bid again. If you bid 3M for someone you are hardly going to up your bid by 5M

I hope this speeds up the Maynard situation as i would prefer we got Maynard. Keep Waghorn and just offer them cash. 6M and tell them they have until the end of the day to accept or we withdraw our offer and interest. Things are taking miles too long and I think we are being too nice and easy in negotiations.

To be fair, Maynard isn't exactly helping proceedings with his non-committal attitude to Bristol and his reluctance to ask for a move whilst at the same time stalling over a new contract. If Maynard had indicated his intentions sooner this whole saga would have been ended days ago.
