Genuine question - am I a plastic Inter fan? I've got no connection with the city and they're a very successful club side historically, so on the face of it I'm sure many would say yes. However the entire reason I started supporting them was because of Milan's dominance of Italian and European football at the time and Inter's continual amazing record of grasping defeat from the jaws of victory and somehow managing to fail every single season, even when having the 2 most expensive strikers in history as a forward partnership. When they did start winning I was hardly likely to stop supporting them was I? And on top of that I had a season ticket, is a plastic someone who catches 2 flights to travel 2000 miles every other weekend to watch a team? I can see both arguments to be honest,
I started supporting City because we got promoted to the PL, and were basically top come October of that first season. Am I plastic?
I think a plastic would change to the next successful team. Someone atending when the teams doing well would be a band wagon jumper or glory hunter.
Interesting. I'd view a plastic as anyone who suddenly starts supporting a team when they become successful, or chooses to support a team, to which they have no obvious allegiance, that is always successful. But I do see the distinction you've made.
I doubt there is a definitive definition, but I would take it that they are people who go along to games because they are interested in seeing a team or individual play, rather than being a specific fan of a team. That is how I started. If you disagree, please define a "plastic" yourself.
I can't think of many people that start supporting a club when they're ****, unless it's in the family. I would suggest that a plastic is anyone that supports whichever club is doing well.
Stop these unnecessary, extraneous attacks on fellow posters. You're supposed to be a moderator, but you are one of (the several) most offensive posters on here, and you're getting worse. Chill out. Treat yourself to a Koolaid, or summat.
Everyone I know who is a Hull City fan started supporting them when they were ****. For many of them their family weren't fans.
Family or local I should have said, as I'm Australian and the question was directed at an Australian becoming a fan, I was taking the fact I'm not local as implied. EDIT: I'm mixing my threads up. But yes, family or local team are generally the reasons other than successful or stand out performance.
Was the family connection in my case. Grandfather went to the first ever City match, father taken at age 8 and myself aged 8. When I started going people were just thankful to watch any standard of professional football after the war years. Then Raich Carter came along......
No clear definition of a "plastic" exists, but mine would be someone who goes to watch a game because of the opposition. For example, someone who goes to watch a Hull City game because they are playing Man Utd - not just because they are Hull City.
That might just be your problem. You assume way too much when you dont have a clue and then you spout it on here as if only you have a right to support our club.
Urban Dictionary has a go... Plastic Fan - People who hardly ever watch their team play, and have no knowledge of their clubs history, culture or chants.
