I never claimed it didn't mean a lot to him. I merely stated that for the vast majority of the athletes in those sports they would rather win things other than the Olympics, whilst Andy Murray is still one of them he probably cares more than most.
I guarantee that if both offered the same prize money or offered no money, most people would choose Olympics every time. That goes for ALL sports.
Completely disagree, prize money is largely irrelevant for the very best in most of the sports mentioned, its about prestige and what is considered the elite of the their game. Each team in the NBA finals gets around $8 million to share between 15 players, that means someone like Kevin Durant would receive about two weeks salary as a bonus so he's clearly not winning it for the prize money.
No chance. The Olympics is the pinnacle for every sport there apart from probably Football. You saw Djokovic's reaction when he lost to Del Potro, right? He's NEVER acted like that at a Slam.
Its categorically not the pinnacle of football, road cycling, tennis, golf or basketball and it won't be the pinnacle of baseball when that's introduced. I mean golf hasn't been in the Olympics for over 100 years and even when it was brought back half the best players couldn't be bothered. Its not the pinnacle of rugby or boxing either although I didn't include them because it is the pinnacle of Amateur Boxing and Rugby 7's.
My favourite competitor so far is the Jamaican who won the gold in the 110m hurdles this morning. He's just so so bloody fabulous. Even his reaction to winning is so much more fabulous than anyone elses.
Ryan Lochte and James Feigen ordered to stay in Brazil A judge in Brazil has issued an order preventing US swimmers Ryan Lochte and James Feigen from leaving the country after police queried their evidence in a robbery case. Lochte, Feigen and two other members of the US swimming team said they had been robbed at gunpoint in a taxi in Rio. But police say their account of when they arrived at the Olympic village does not square with CCTV recordings. Local media report that Lochte left Brazil before the order was issued. The Paralympics seems to be turning into a bit of a disaster, the organisers have run out of money (they're about £70m short already), none of the Paralympic athletes have been paid travelling expenses and now they've just announced that only 12% of the tickets have been sold.
Brazil now 3-0 up after about twenty minutes, two from Jesus, they're walking it. I agree with some earlier comments, stuff like football and golf shouldn't be in the Olympics.
Couldn't agree more... whilst its designed to expose sports to 'new' watchers, lets be honest, are Brazilians more likely to play and watch beach volleyball than golf..? The Olympic ideal is what it should be. A 16 year old girl (Amy Tinker) winning a bronze medal having joined a local gymnastics club at 2, A young man (Nile Wilson) winning silver on the high bars having trained 10 years to go to the olympics... and the young trampoline girl (Bryony Page) winning a silver .. thats what its all about... BTW.. did anyone hear the Five Live commentary on Nile Wilsons high bar routine... excellent!!!
I'm fine with sports such as golf, football and tennis being in the Olympics, as long as it is amateurs, not professionals. Otherwise, don't bother.
Agree Quill.... If its golf we have the Walker Cup Team, Football Under 21's, Tennis (not sure what the second tier would be) County level seeded players perhaps... sports like squash should be in...
This is so depressing. Someone should help them out. As much as I'm pissed off at whoevers to blame, there's so much money in sport, it would be a drop in the ocean to help rescue these games. This is the world today though. It's heart breaking.
