I see the Beeb (and Boardman in particular) are being criticised on soshal meedya for being sexist and in the 'dark ages' for the throwaway remark of Boardman's that Kenny was looking at Trott and thinking "what's for tea?"

Has modern British society become so 'right on' that these sorts of good humoured, disposable comments have to animate people in this way? Pathetic.

No, it's just a tiny minority of no life idiots who have access to social media, hardly 'modern British society'.

Has modern British society become so 'thin skinned' that whenever an idiot takes being PC too far there is an immediate 'end of the world' backlash?

Keep it in perspective. These are small, those are far away.

Though I do find the continued presence of John Inverdale, now turning up at the boxing about which he knows nothing, deeply offensive. Though there is the chance than yet another sportsman or woman will humiliate him live on TV to look forward to.

    50 medals, outstanding.

And as they said - she's only 24, so potentially two more Olympics for her...

Yes, the twitterati is full of politically correct saddoes who have nothing better to do than hound anyone who doesn't fit their metrosexual new man profile. I think they should just get back to doing the washing and ironing...

And then there were doubts being cast last night on the GB cycling team, wondering whether there is anything 'suspicious' in their excellent performances. Of course, this doubt is being cast by the French, German and Australian cyclists, all of whom pretty much failed to show up at the Games. I see they are now desperately back-pedalling - something that you would hope they could achieve without any outside assistance.

    Today's useless piece of trivia.....

Steve Redgrave, Chris Hoy, Jason Kenny, Mo Farah all share the same birthday.........obviously in different years but that's spooky......

Cycling was brilliant last night, as a country the UK is blessed with exceptional talent in cycling......

What sport is he actually supposed to be an expert on, if any?

Was it rugby he started out presenting?

I know that he's been used for a few years now at Wimbledon and other tennis, a sport about which everything he knows could be written on the back of a postage stamp......

He is an utter cretin that pee's off tennis fans every time he speaks.

Where will the buffoon pop up next........
    cricket?

He is the bore who stands at the bar at the club (tennis, cricket, rugby, take your pick) talking way too loud with strong opinions and no knowledge on everything. Eventually he will be punched.

If Aggers can do dressage, Inverdale can do synchronised swimming. But only for the minor places.

His sporting record consists of being the captain of the Southampton University tennis team for two years whilst studying for his History degree. He then did a post-grad in Journalism and started working for the BBC in 1982. This is his third Olympics as a presenter.

Personally, I don't find him so bad. I find myself becoming an armchair expert in so many obscure sports every four years, it's kind of reassuring to see someone with the same mix of temporary enthusiasm and self-proclaimed 'expertise' on screen.

Yes, I heard that Stan. Pat Hickey the President of the Irish Olympic Committee. I am delighted as I think he is so corrupt. He is an administrator though and is not encouraging athletes to use performance enhancing drugs which is what the Russian state has done. That is why Ciarrai suggested the whole Russian team should not be there. I am suggesting the Russians are paying judges at the boxing to ensure their boxers win medals based on two fights I have seen where the Russian boxer clearly lost the fight.

Have to say I don't mind Inverdale either, he was a decent presenter on radio, okay that was many moons ago, his rugby and wimbledon presenting were/are fine, he seems amiable enough and at least he's a trained journalist unlike some that they drag out to do the presenting..........now Claire Baldwin can grate on the teeth a bit........

Fair enough Fingy. I agree about the Russians, the IOC was pathetic in not banning them all, like the Paralympic blokes did. I am sure that some of them are clean and don't deserve the reputation, but it is institutionalised cheating, a policy not a one off.

Exactly. Regarding the Irish Olympic Ticket scandal, the Brazilian police have issued arrest warrants for four suspects who work for the ticketing agency involved. One of the guys is Irish, one is Dutch and two are British. Does that mean the very good performances by the Dutch and British teams in Rio are tainted in any way? Of course not. This ticketing story is set to run.

Britain's cycling tactics 'not for the purists'

There has been some veiled scepticism from France's Le Telegramme regarding the British cycling team's triumph at Rio.

"Sprint is fast becoming above all a sport of strength, in which the emphasis is on muscle power - perhaps excessively so for the purists," they wrote.

"The phenomenon affects women's events slightly less, although Britain has been able to 'manufacture' a female sprinter in barely three years. Katy Marchant, who won a bronze medal in the speed race at Rio, was still taking part in the heptathlon at the beginning of 2013."

Some media outlets quote the words of German rider Kristina Vogel, who said other countries' teams were asking themselves just how the British were managing to notch up quite so many medals.

Meanwhile, outspoken French ex-cyclist, ex-coach and now columnist Antoine Vayer has been posting a number of provocative tweets aimed at British cyclists, with the latest simply stating: "£ycling".

The Sydney Morning Herald highlights Australia’s lack of medals in Rio as somewhat of an expensive failure.

“Australia’s underwhelming performance in Brazil is set to come at a cost of as much as $11 million per medal to the taxpayer,” it says.

The report adds that Australia has tried but failed to take a leaf out of Team GB’s funding strategy in its search for Olympic success.

“In all, $340m has been injected into summer Olympic sports using the national lottery funding model adopted by Great Britain in the lead-up to its home Olympics as an inspiration.

"But while Team GB, with £274m ($466m) pledged to their Olympic sports between 2013 and 2017, are still enjoying the afterglow of London by punching well above their weight here, the jury is still out for Australia's programme.”

I notice some news outlets list the medal table by the number of golds won and others by the number of medals won. What do you guys think is correct?
