Its very easy to look good in a bad team and Robson did that for United between 1981-1991,he faded when United got better.

Emelyn Hughes has been spoke of on this segment of the thread, a truely great player, but with Case you're taking the piss. Go and Google another player!

Jimmy Case had something Robson hadn't and that was versatility. He could also play wide right.
Could Robson play 2 positions? Half the time he couldn't play the one he was supposed to. Some have even tried to compare Robson to Souness, thats like comparing cat piss to champagne and its not Souness that is the cat piss.

yeah because Sparky, Strachen, McClair, Wilkins, Macari, Olsen, Whiteside, I could go on but I'm far too lazy - all couldn't hit a barn door from two feet out?

Swarbs - if you read my post i said that a few names worth a mention were those. And then i went on to say Robson was up there with the best.

In my opinion the best (in order) are:

1 - Bobby Moore
2 - Bryan Robson
3 - Billy Wright

Strachan-muck.
Wilkins. Big Fat Ron even poked fun at him...his nickname for him was ''The Crab'' due to his ability to pass the ball side-ways and back-ways but never forwards.
Hughes before he went to Barcelona was a good but not great player, but like many of Uniteds players including Robson..he had a drink problem. He like Robson and Whiteside and Roy Keane is a recovering alcoholic.
As for the rest......great players......not.
Lou Macari...the player that Bill Shankly said ''I only wanted him for the reserves''.
Back to Robson,He was offered to Liverpool in 1981,but Bob Paisley said no thanks as he already had the best reserve team in europe.

Robson played centre back, left back and centre mid for West Brom, and anchor man and centre mid for Utd. That's a damn sight more versatile than the Fletcher / Beckham / Gerrard / Henderson combo of centre mid / wide right.

You do realise that Ron Atkinson asked Bill Shankly how much he should pay to take Robson to Utd and Shankly replied:

“Every penny that it takes, Ron, every penny that it takes!”

But let me guess, Shankly didn't know what he was talking about, right?

Fair enough, but I don't agree with Pearce and Shilton being worth a mention as great captains. Great players yes, great captains no imo. But then like Psycho said the whole England captaincy thing gets over hyped by the media.

Agree 100% with that <ok>

Gerrard started his career as a defender - playing both RB and CB. He has also played DM, CM, CAM, RM, LM, ST. So Swarbs get it right!!

I still remember one of his first games when he was a defender and he made 2 goal line clearances and was voted man of the match, and he was only a sub. The best bit was his celebration when he saved the goals, it was just like he had scored.

Oh I wasn't knocking Gerrard's versatility. I was just pointing out that being able to play CM/RM doesn't indicate versatility - there are at least four players in the current Utd and Liverpool squad who can do just that, and more if you count Meireles and Park. Being able to play defence and midfield shows proper versatility imo.

I would love to see Daniel Agger step up to midfield (although, obviously at the moment we need more help in defence!). He has great awareness, great passing ability, probably the best shot in our squad, and of course excellent defensive abilities. A role of DM would of been ideal for him in my opinion.

Skylarker.
Thats correct.
I remember numerous occasions under Houllier when Gerrard played right back.
He is also one of a number of Liverpool players that scored in European finals whilst having played right back in those finals.
The others being
Markus Babbel.
Phil Neal
Vladimir Smicer.(Smicer replaced Steve Finnan at right back,he went forward when Gerrard took the right back position).

And with an injury record like his he'd practically be a carbon copy of Robson ;)
