Unless you bung him some money also.

Who will this screw up the most?

FOOTBALL history was made this weekend in the United States where, in a game between New York Red Bulls II and Orlando City B, video review technology was used for the first time in a professional match.

The International Football Association Board this year gave permission for their Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system to be trialled in the American third division, the United Soccer League (USL), with one eye on rolling the technology out across the world for the 2018-19 season.

As part of the trial, an additional referee sits in a booth with access to video replays from all available cameras and angles. His job is to advise the head referee on ‘game-changing’ decisions, such as goals, penalty decisions, red cards and cases of mistaken identity.

This weekend’s match between the reserve sides from the Red Bulls and Orlando City saw the technology used for the first time, with referee Ismail Elfath and VAR Allen Chapman making the historic decisions. Elfath and Chapman invoked the use of replay technology on two incidents deemed controversial in the match.

The first came in the 35th minute where Orlando defender Conor Donovan fouled New York forward Junior Flemmings on a counter-attack. Elfath’s immediate decision was to award a foul outside the Orlando box, but a review was called for as it was not clear whether or not Donovan was the last defender.

Upon inspection of the video it was determined that the 20-year-old was indeed the last man and he was subsequently sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity.

The second review came with ten minutes to play in the match, where Orlando’s Kyle McFadden received a second yellow card after the severity of his tackle on Florian Valot was reviewed and deemed worthy of a booking.

Early reports of the trail have been positive, with NYRB II boss John Wolyniec saying that the use of video replay technology didn’t have a negative impact on the match.

“It’s a credit to MLS and to USL that they want to be on the front foot as far as technology, the game of soccer, advancing the game of soccer and advancing the product,” Wolyniec told reporters after the match.

Not so sure this is a good idea, will it slow the game with officials checking every foul? Also checking different angles and slow motion footage can warp what actually happens. Not saying this is all bad just that I'm unsure about how it will be used.

I think each team should be allowed to call two inquiries per match. 1 per half. Shouldn't take any longer than trying to console some diving **** holding his face after falling over some grass.

    Chelsea ****ed, I'm for it.

I know exactly what you mean Luv. There's nothing worse than watching a stop/start game. It just kills the whole gusto of the match...if that pace gets killed then the Premier league loses some of its attraction, to me, at least.

Players would save their claim for something worthwhile. This would also eradicate the begging that goes on because the ref would see that as a protest that warrants further action...I.e use up their claim.

Players have far too much clout on the pitch..pussies.

I'm not with this video tech..

I prefer the old game where refs get things wrong, fans argue etc. etc.

It's swings and roundabouts, but I'm for keeping it as it is personally.

I like the controversy around the game, it's part of what makes it exciting.

I agree, it can be very frustrating when it goes against you but it's part of the game. Take it back to grass roots, I'm currently teaching my 9 year old who has all of a sudden started to love footy, one of the first things I've taught him is to get in tight and give the oppos shirt a little tug to get in their head. <laugh>

I'm for it ... delays already happen with all the handbag swinging that inevitability follows pens etc ... this might actually speed it up ... plus it should eradicate the bias that Fergie enjoyed at OT for many years if you were allowed to challenge both the giving and, in this example, not giving of penalty decisions ...

...might also mean Spuds reduced to 3 players at the Bridge mind ... :)

One claim per match...if you are proved right you keep it...if not you lose it.
Arguing with the ref counts as using your review so that will shut the whining ****ers up.
You argue with the ref after you have used up your review is a straight red.

So much time is wasted with players arguing over "controversial " decisions which would stop with the introduction of a video appeal system.
It will also stop ****er managers hiding behind the officials when they lose...as they would have to justify why they did not challenge a **** decision or why did they waste the appeal challenging a good decision.
Finally, it would make referees improve as if they are having 6 or 7 successful challenges against them each match they'll get slaughtered

Guarantee an 89th minute appeal over nothing by every team hanging on for a win.

It's desperately needed in the EPL, far too much referee cheating going on, not as blatantly obvious as it was in the 90's or as it is in Spain, but it's definitely there.
