Yes. A phenomenal player and a pretty good manager.

I think Halliday still holds the record for the fastest 100 top flight goals in English history. In 1925, Charlie Buchan left for Arsenal (today, they'd call him a greedy b**tard, like Bent or Gyan). So we had to bolster our attack and bought Halliday from Dundee who had converted him from left-wing to centre-forward. He scored 100 in something like his first 102 games here! Crazy. I believe it still stands.

And yet, he never got a Scottish cap. The main reason was, of course, Hughie Gallagher. But even when Hughie wasn't playing, Halliday wasn't picked. Nobody's quite sure why.

As a manager he took Aberdeen to their first-ever Scottish League title in 1955 (a distinction shared by only one other manager there - Alex Ferguson). He then got Leicester to promotion into the First Division ... and did us.

    Great stats.

People talk of Clough 54 goals in 61 games. Now thats fantastic. But what about his time at Boro 197 goals in 213 games. Bloody hell

Combined 251 in 274. Now thats canny impressive.

Yep. I wouldn't take anything away from Cloughie. I firmly believe you can't compare players like that though. Gallagher was noted for his very clever ball-work. Put Sergio Aguero back in 1928, and Gallagher would make his look like an amateur. But bring Gallagher to the EPL today, and the physiques and athleticism would leave Gallagher for dead too. All we can really say is x player was good in his own time and leave it at that.

Aye. The game has changed so much.

This forum would have been great during some of the bygone seasons.

We are back to goal partnerships again here. Cloughie was partnered with a lanky lad called Alan Peacock and he provided many a knock down into the danger area. He played a fair few times for England as well.

My bad, as it was at Boro and both were kids at the time. Needless to say they were not best buddies as Clough took the praise without acknowledging the help. A bit like Shearer and Mel Sutton at Blackburn.

Peacock scored 24 goals in 34 games the season after Clough left. So obviously was a talent himself.

See that, can remember 1948 when old men were telling me how lucky I was seeing a goal from that Stan Matthews seeing as he never headed a ball or got his shorts dirty, Mind it took a while before the penny dropped about him taking corners with the lace in the ball away from the centre forward so he did not hurt his head.

Entirely different type of players, I often thought Cloughie had only touched the ball a couple of times in the game and that was to score two goals

    Sour grapes?

Or the mag rag has no better stories

Sunderland flop Alfred N’Diaye says his Black Cats career failed due to a clash of “character” with Paolo Di Canio.

N’Diaye joined the Wearside outfit in a £4 million move from Turkish club Bursaspor in January 2013.

He played in nine of the next 11 games under Martin O’Neill before the Northern Irishman was sacked two months later, yet remained in the first-team picture when Di Canio took on the Stadium of Light reins.

That relationship soon soured, however, as the Senegal international was shipped out to another Turkish club - Eskisehirspor - on a six-month loan in July 2013, before spending the remainder of that campaign on loan at Real Betis.

N’Diaye joined the Spanish side on a permanent basis in August 2014, and recently signed for Villarreal.

But reflecting on his time on Wearside, the 26-year-old midfielder said all was “not right” once Di Canio arrived in place of O’Neill.

“It went very well until the arrival of a new coach, Paolo Di Canio,” he said.

“We did not argue, but it was not right.

“Knowing me and seeing his character, it was better that I leave. Yet, I have played all the matches.”

Di Canio was eventually sacked after senior players were said to have approached the club’s hierarchy about the Italian’s leadership.

Utterly ****e player. Looked like a girl when he kicked a football. That said. I don't think any of the players liked Paolo.
