Probably the same arguments but about different players.

I mentioned Hurley. An og on his debut and got beat 7-0. The following week got beat 6-0. Can you imagine the meltdown after costing the equivalent of £20m. <laugh>

1948. Stanley Matthews scores a headed goal at Roker Park, Sunderland youngster Shackleton helps him to rearrange his hair by smoothing it down.

And what a collectors' item that was - a Matthews headed goal was about as rare as chickens' teeth!!! I don't think anybody who was there will ever forget it. :emoticon-0148-yes:

Aye, shipyard money's ruining the game. Bloody Sunderland are just buying success. <laugh> Nowt much changes, does it?

    FAST FORWARD TO 1908 :

Have you seen what Middlesbrough's done? Paid £1,000 for Alf Common! Why, no player's worth that much man. <laugh> Nowt much changes, does it?

    Now here's a real head-banger for you.

In May, 1958, Sunderland won the final game of the season away to Portsmouth. We all thought we'd escaped that dreaded first-ever relegation. Then the news came through that Leicester had won 1-0 at Birmingham ... and we were down! An awful moment. But does anybody remember who Leicester's manager was at that time? Have a think.

Answer : It was Dave Halliday !
