They will hound anyone they fancy, it's just that celebrities sell papers. The phone-hacking exposure showed how callous they are.
I do have to say - there are also a lot of good people there too. My editor on the online sports desk gave me copious amount of opportunities where others probably wouldn't. I'm not going to say it's the most ethical in its approach, but you'll also find that those who follow the celebs are more often than not freelancers.
