A terrific day for GB and second on the medal table. We will have more medals in cycling and sailing and possibilities in equestrian and women's hockey amongst others, but are we expecting much in athletics or did we peak in London. I presume Mo is running in the 5K and we often have decent relay teams if they don't drop the baton .....anyone else I should look out for.
Just seen that Murray has his first game in Cincinnati in less than 2 days....how do you get yourself up for a match after such an emotion-draining event as last night?
What a fantastic event!! All the runners came home well under 45 seconds, even Matthew Hudson-Smith in 44.61 who was 8th, so all the athletes in this event should feel pleased. It was interesting looking at the disbelief on the faces of Kirana James and LaShawn Merritt as Van Niekerk pulled away in the last 80 metres.
The disappointment in that race being two guys who could not get under 10 seconds in a final involving Usain Bolt!! Contrast that with the women's 100m where all bar one, who picked up or aggravated an injury, went under 11 seconds.
I've just watched the last set this morning. Well done the players, but those Argentinian fans were an utter disgrace. Appalling behaviour.
Luckily didn't put off Murray for long....he is a bit susceptible to minor distractions. Sometimes a continuously noisy atmosphere may be better than a silence broken by a camera click or a packet of crisps being opened. The behaviour at the golf was in some ways worse....the fans there were complete amateurs...continually snapping pictures for one thing....and as for the spectator picking up a ball!! And the commentator remarked that that wasn't the first time. Perhaps fans should have accreditation as well.
Yes the golf fans were bad too. The bloke that shouted at him when he approached the net to play that shot and missed it was a knob and should have been grown out. When Murray turned to look at him and complain, the bloke stood up with his arms spread, laughing at him. If I'd had been Murray if have walked over to him at the end and given him the bird!!
I had a dreadful bloke next to me at the match on Saturday....every player was effing useless, apart from Tadic (as he apparently was only an effing idiot once). And apparently if we lose to Sunderland, Puel is out. Really Some people have never heard of being encouraging....I don't know what pleasure they get from a game as nothing less than Barcelona at their peak would have pleased this guy.
Talking of fan behaviour there were one or two fans running into the paths of the marathon runners yesterday morning in the home stretch. Luckily the offenders were dragged off by the police.
That guy was thrown out with his mate by security....if it was the same man. Perhaps instead of a number of challenges, each sportsman could have a gun and be permitted to shoot one spectator....would add a bit of spice and keep the fans very very quiet.
No that wasn't the guy who shouted at Murray during the rally. The bloke thrown out was on the other side. The one who shouted during the point was just to the side of the umpires chair. I'm liking the gun idea!
Yes, I watched Laura Muir in her 1500m semi-final last night too. She flowed round the track almost making it look easy. Was interviewed by Phil Jones afterwards and she was just a bit out of breath, that's all. Loads left in the tank, so I reckon she could go well under 4 minutes, which to me means she is capable of winning.
Michael Johnson was asking about Van Niekerk's split times. Well here they are: 100m [block start]: 10.7 secs 200m: 9.8 300m: 10.5 400m: 12.0 The last 100m indicates he can go even faster.
Interesting little statistic. If the USA were absolutely rubbish at swimming they'd be in 4th place in the medal table with 10 Golds. Unfortunately, they have Michael Phelps and are brilliant otherwise anyway. Currently, 16 Golds, 8 Silver, 9 Bronze in the Swimming for the USA. Which puts them in first place on the medal table at the moment, simply by swimming.
