There was once was a boy called Ari Siggurdsson, after school he delivered messages from the town's only telephone.

So proclaims the Skyr yoghurt advert.

If there's only one telephone, how is anyone else calling it with messages?

So they've set up a complete telephone exchange in a 1960's remote Iceland town, with mile upon mile of telephone poles and wires from all over, with the intention of having only one phone in the whole borough?

Sorry guys I just don't buy it.

But that was what life was like....very few people had a phone. Not unusual for a small place to only have one person rich enough to have a phone line. Often the priest or doctor would take messages.

Yup! I'm only in my early 50s and can remember my parents finally getting a phone. I come from a small town in south west Wales (and it was a lot smaller back then) and neighbours would give our phone number to family members for emergencies.

The youth of today have no idea...:emoticon-0129-call:

Before phones were more common, BT (or rather its equivalent) were obliged to provide telephone kiosks in quite remote places so that people had reasonable access....that is why you used to see them in the middle of nowhere in Scotland for instance. I moved to Horsham in the seventies and had to join a waiting list for a phone and was eventually offered a shared line with a neighbour....fine as long as they weren't on it all the time.

Well this is a nice little distraction for the Trump campaign:

Secret Ledger in Ukraine Lists Cash for Donald Trump’s Campaign Chief

Handwritten ledgers show $12.7 million in undisclosed cash payments designated for Mr. Manafort from Mr. Yanukovych’s pro-Russian political party from 2007 to 2012, according to Ukraine’s newly formed National Anti-Corruption Bureau. Investigators assert that the disbursements were part of an illegal off-the-books system whose recipients also included election officials.

Anti-corruption officials there say the payments earmarked for Mr. Manafort, previously unreported, are a focus of their investigation, though they have yet to determine if he actually received the cash. While Mr. Manafort is not a target in the separate inquiry of offshore activities, prosecutors say he must have realized the implications of his financial dealings.

Before he fled to Russia two years ago, Mr. Yanukovych and his Party of Regions relied heavily on the advice of Mr. Manafort and his firm, who helped them win several elections. During that period, Mr. Manafort never registered as a foreign agent with the United States Justice Department — as required of those seeking to influence American policy on behalf of foreign clients — although one of his subcontractors did.

There's a lot in here. Some of the stuff the article alleges he was a part of seems at least a little shady.

We got our first phone in 1977 and that was only because the house we moved into already had one. Dad didn't wanted it then!
