    Morning All

    The big storm that we had last night passed over, but everything outside is rather wet stopping further grass cutting. The sun looks as if it will soon be out and that will get things dry quickly enough.

    The first of Mme's purchases has been attached to the wall and she seems well pleased with the result. Next I suppose I should read the instructions for the next piece of assembly, but I would rather be out in the fresh air.

    Afternoon all. Beautiful sunshine this afternoon, and hassle with the driveway man. It had to happen sometime. He's suddenly decided he wants cash because we're 'paying less than cost for this job'...a touch of the ol' blarney if you ask me but i've got Mr H onto it..he may not be a Watford fan but he definitely has his uses where workmen are concerned!

    Afternoon all. Still very humid here, resulting in only 3 hours of sleep. Oh well, now to crack on with the jobs. Thanks for the offer Norway and the tips. You would think after all the times we did practice ones in school, i could write a CV.

    An IBAN is an international bank account number. The number Dan will give N will probably have 2 digits, then GB, then the sort code and account number. There is also a SWIFT code which identifies the branch to banks in other countries so that might also be needed, but hopefully not.

    Guess who works in the finance industry. (well, I do live in Jersey :) )

    CV's are possibley the worst thing known to man. Worse than Tyra Banks.

    When I decided it was time to move jobs, it took me about 3 months to write my CV!! The two most important things would be:

    • straight to the point - no waffle. This also helps keep it short. I was always taught to keep it to a maximum of 3 sides
    • shamelessly sell yourself - think of your CV as a sales brochure.

    Also, don't trust recruitment agencies. They are much like second hand car salesman, or 2 month old babies - stupid.

    Problem is when you get older (especially if you have a sub contractor )your CV gets very long !
    Go with the most recent stuff first! and highlight things on your Cv that you think your perspective employer might need !
    Use your Cover letter To introduce yourself , sell yourself (ie mentioning what you can bring to the perspective employer)!
    Keep it short sharp and if possible inject a bit of humour!
    Remember Presentation is key! I have binned without reading long winded CV, I have not even looked at CV's on the strength (or weakness) of the cover note!

    Hope this helps a bit Dan and BBW

    Sound advice there Norway. I too have had plenty of involvement in recruitment exercises and used to be constantly amazed at the number of mini books we received in the guise of cv's (or resumes as they are known in Oz) - even when our job ads clearly stipulated 'brief resume' with application. Two pages is way more than enough IMO - three or more would be binned straight away.

    I've written my own, taught others how to write them as well as assessed applications & can only advise:

    1. Only include pertinent employment history and actually define it that way - that will avoid the prospective employer wondering about gaps in your work history;
    2. Refer to the skills that you have gained in that employment in terms of your proficiency with them;
    3. If your work history hasn't lent itself to the skills sought, think about those you have gained and how transferrable they may be;
    4. Avoid the temptation to squeeze more in by reducing the font size. That way it may not end up straight in the bin (as has happened to me)!

    BBW - a cv is something you should be thinking about all the time in this day and age, and taking three months to prepare one is not doing yourself any favours! When I worked for the Australian Govt, where job/promotion competition was extremely fierce, I learnt to 'visit' mine monthly to update it - even if I thought I had nothing to add, I'd just read through it to make sure. Five promotions in seven years tells me it worked!

    Exactly BB. Short sharp detail of pertinent experience, starting with the newest first and working downwards. To be honest, layout is half the battle. Keep it neat and clean, and make the letter short and sweet with a little detail just to garner an interest, make them want to go on and read the CV.
