Today Lyndon Gooch made his Sunderland and Premier League debut. It's barely registered a mention on the board. Saying that since Watmore broke the first team, we've given Premier League debuts to the following academy products. Watmore, Pickford, Greenwood, Honeyman, Tom Robson and now Gooch. While Asoro and Beadling have made the bench. Do you know what, there maybe more who've made the bench. Add to that Adam Mitchell made his debut on the last day of the 12/13 season.

That's 9 members off the top of my head from our academy playing parts in the match day squads. Is it any wonder Gooch barely registered? It's becoming common practice. We've got a bright wave of youth hungry for it, all talented with bags of potential. We've got a manager who famously puts his faith in youth. Could this be the dawning of the Golden Generation I've been harping on about for the last few year?

I have to say. I put my balls on the block bigging them up as much as I have. They're not letting me down so far.

Aye you've definitely championed them along the way. I'm chuffed as many of them have got squad numbers. They've also had a great coach in Stockdale past few years. Think he's only just moved up to the first team.

I was at the Exeter game where we won 6-3 or whatever early last season and we were struggling until Gooch and Watmore came off the bench. Yes it was only a league 2 outfit but they came on with no fear and changed the game.

It's brilliant to see them all involved. Gooch started ahead of Khazri, who cost us neck end of £10m, just for a little bit of perspective.

Aye Stockdale has done an exceptional job with him. Now in the perfect position to brief Moyes on them. Stockdale will be so important to first team with these lads breaking through.

I'm still a bit confused about Gooch starting ahead of Khazri, mind. Is he officially above him in the pecking order now? Or does Moyes just see him as better defensively so thought he was our best option agasint a strong team like City? I've always thought Khazri's workrate and tracking back were spot on, personally.

    Strange one.

He may have been feeling tight. We've got enough injuries already and Moyes has no qualms in giving youth a shot. The lad may have been on fire in training too. Sure Moyes will explain his decision in due course.

I'm all for it mate. Didn't see the game today but if it pushes Khazri to take his place back them good for us.

We've got competition for places from the youngsters before we've made any significant signings, can only be positive IMO.

We have to have all the players from last season starting including Junazaj, drop Borini, Moyes took a hell of a risk against Man c, I would have put the new players in against Shrewsbury, and sadly we lossed. Our left side defending is appalling and that needs sorting out, PVA has to be shifted out of there.

I think he is looking for a reaction. He was mumbling about our lack of right backs earlier reckoning they were cause of us losing.

Sunderland under-23s host Chelsea on Sunday as the Premier League 2 campaign gets underway, KO 12.05pm.

Ahead of the opening fixture safc.com has put together a small all you need to know guide...

Speaking Welsh – Sunderland under-23s coach Andy Welsh

"Pre-season has been tough but the players have worked hard and it's important we remain focused ahead of the start of the season.

"Various players have stepped up from the youth team and it's been a bit of a learning curve for them.

"That said, some players have done incredibly well, the likes of Elliot Embleton and Joel Asoro have earned some credits among the first-team, so that's great and it just shows if you apply yourself then the chances can be there."

    The opposition: Chelsea 2015-16 reviewed

    League position: 5th

    League wins: 9

    League defeats: 7

    League goals scored: 34

    League goals conceded: 30

    Last five league fixtures: L-W-L-D-W

    Chelsea U23s coach: Adi Viveash

Previously youth team manager, Adi Viveash was given the opportunity to take charge of the club’s under-23s team ahead of the 2014/15 season.

Viveash was rewarded for his positive work with the under-19s squad who won the UEFA Youth League after beating Shakhtar Donetsk 3-2 in the final.

During his three years with the youth team, Viveash also won the FA Youth Cup twice and could’ve won it a third but lost to Norwich in the final.

Viveash is an experience member of Chelsea’s backroom staff and has been at the cub since 2008/09.

    Ticket info

General admission for the game is priced at £3 for adults and £1 for over 65s and under 16s while 2016-17 season card holders can gain free entry.

I think Gooch starting ahead of Khazri was tactical to try and get a fresh Khazri and Januzaj up against a tiring city defence.

It worked because just after they came on we scored.

    Moyes in tactically very good.

I don't think it's about a pecking order, it's about picking the right players and the right tactics to win the game.

The great thing is our young players are good enough to be used in that system.

Like you Bri I've been waiting a long time for the day to arrive that our academy produces players who are good enough to go into the first team, in the premier league, and do well. It looked like it was coming judging by the success of the under 21s and now it's actually happening.

It's a big step forward and I couldn't be more pleased for the lads.

Whilst it is encouraging that the young'uns are getting chances in the first team, you have to remember that we have a very small squad and a lot of injuries.
DM may not have had much choice.

It's good to know that we have some promising players coming through but we definitely still need M'Vila plus at least 2 other top notch first teamers in and that's assuming we keep Kone.

The likes of Asoro can then be given game time to help them progress as opposed to having to play because of lack of first team player options.

I think there's an element of that but then again he did leave senior players like Khazri and Lens on the bench in favour of Gooch and Watmore, he didn't have to do that.

It seems to me that if Moyes likes the cut of their jib then our young players are going straight into that first team.
