Well it looks like you've flummoxed others here too Roof, though you seem to be the only one unable to see it. Bored now, so I have to say...

Although to me this is irrelevant , what is the shelf life for a Olympic boxer and how many events can he enter each Olympics .
Compared to swimmers , a Olympic boxer should get a 5 times bigger medal .
And for one last time ...To me " The Greatest Olympian " is someone who was in the Olympics , regardless of winning a medal or not and is an inspirational person during and after the Olympics .
Now you guys can think and believe what you want and I will respect your opinions . It just probably won't be mine and mine won't be yours

So does that mean the boxers on the link I provided who won 3 golds should be having a medal 5 times as big?

Any athlete that can enter only 1 event per Olympics deserves more recognition that an athlete that can enter a half dozen .....IMO.
I believe no one should be allowed to enter more than one " Individual " event . "

We all have a different opinion on who's the greatest Olympian.

In my opinion to be considered to be a great Olympian of should have won multiple medals and multiple games. Lots of worthy candidates all ready mentioned, but I can't go beyond Phelps as number one. But others I know will disagree.

I agree on that one, so based on that Sir Steve Redgrave & Mathew Pinsent are up there with the very best.

So multiple events like the decathlon shouldn't be allowed? How about gymnastics where they use different apparatus ? You are not making sense tbh

Whew - Murray won on a tie break. Getting closer to a medal now. <applause>

I disagree Roof (if that's OK). You are right on the fact that boxers are in an all or nothing sport and some athletes are able to go for more medals but aside from relays the disciplines are often different. Many runners excel at 10,000 but don't do the 5,000 and vice versa. Same for swimmers. Many of those athletes are only able to have one shot at a medal too, either through choice or ability.

If you think about it many sports are 'one-shot'. What about high jump? Long jump? It doesn't devalue or over-value a gold medal either way imo. The Olympics didn't matter enough to Clay (Ali) to do it again and that was understandable at that time. But he was a one-shot Olympian in a one-shot sport.

Asking who is the greatest or most famous sportsman of all time is a completely different question that may have a different answer to the one posed imo.

I think Nadal is through. He'll be a big challenge, though Murray has beaten him a number of times.

Nadal, is coming back from injury, so I expect Murray to be too strong for him. Well I hope he is anyway!!

You only get a gold , silver and bronze in the decathlon taffy , your totally missing the point .
Gymnastics should have a medal for each event .No two people should be allowed to enter more than one gymnastic event IMO and if you want to enter the all around , you shouldn't be able to enter the individual events .
One Athelete , One Event .......it's a team completion and never liked any Athelete winning more than one medal per Olympics .Just my opinion ..
I have more Olympic respect for " Eddie the Eagle ". Than I do for Michael Phelps .....as an Olympian .

The question was " who is the greatest Olympian " not " Who is the greatest Sportsman " ... I understand the question and given my answer .i really couldn't care less what anyone thinks about that answer ....except for me

But people have always been able to enter more than one event, in my opinion it makes them even a bigger Olympian by having the ability to be able to do that.

And what about my example of Daley Thompson who won the decathlon twice in 1980 and 1984? He didn't enter one event he entered 10 for each Olympics, he for me would be a greater Olympian than Ali by quite some margin, simply because he won it twice and arguably was in a much tougher event than Ali

Daley Thompson entered One event and won One medal per Olympics . He just had to do a whole bunch of different things in the One event to win
I stand by my opinion that one athlete should only be allowed to enter only one event per Olympics
