I'm really enjoying watching the Olympic games so far but it's messed around with my sleeping pattern. Anyway looking forward to the track events but there is one I just never get. The triple jump, why? Long jump OK but another jump event with a skip and a hop, why is anyone intrested in being good at somthong that serves no purpose in life? I have done a quick and admittedly very half hearted search on interweb but no clear info about its point. Can anyone enlighten me?
He turned it round pal,won the final 6 games to ease through ! Should be a straight shootout between himself and Nadal.
Some historians claim that the Triple Jump was part of the Ancient Olympic Games as jumps of 15 feet or longer were recorded, thus meaning that no one could reach such a distance without it being a triple jump.Whether this is down to artistic license is anyone's guess, but it has definitely been around since the start of the Modern Games. Why it came about is unclear, but it is rumoured that the Ancients wanted to try and combine an event which was a hybrid of the Long jump and the High jump,to make a harder version of both. All this is conjecture, and I'm with you Greg,it's one weird event. Strangely though I find it kind of hypnotic !
Cheers mate! They should replace it with something modern like free running or something along those lines imo!
Sorry about that, not trying to put a downer on the games, I have always been curious about that one. To me it has as much relevance as the egg and spoon race you get at school sports days! Anyway all the best to any athlete whichever sport they are doing
If they had a bad spelling and grammar event I would do very well in it... Sorry, it's a combination of my post it then check afterwards for mistakes + dyslexia and posting on smartphones. You can put the smart into the phone but you can't take the idiot out of its user...
What is the relevance of football (which, of course, like golf and tennis, shouldn't be in the Olympics)? I rather like pointless and irrelevant things.
OK, you can earn a good living out of football if your any good at it! Not much reward in triple jump really is there? Anyway that's way to specific saying football imo. I was thinking you can see where most the events originate from say for instance javelin, well mankind used sphears for hunting etc. Jumping a distance I get but why the adding of a hop and a skip? Would you like to see oylimpic egg and spoon races then Stan? Fair play, each to their own!
Yep, why not? Except the Russians would glue the egg to the spoon. All sports and most things in life are ridiculous and absurd when you think about them. The trick is to enjoy the absurdity. And here's a scenario when being a triple jumper would be useful. You are running away from a fire at full sprint when you see ahead of you a low wall and a few feet ahead of that a 10 ft wide stream..... Egg and spoon......you have 15 seconds to throw a lump of uranium covered with anthrax spores down a mine shaft 100 yards away. Thankfully someone has put it on a spoon, because you don't want to pick it up.
I do, just having issue's with that one tbh! And I'm all for absurdity as most would know by now! My father is a grade four official UK athletics qualified track coach, he couldn't answer my why the hop + skip question and agreed it seems odd and pointless. As a spectator I would much more enjoy watching a new absured sport say like spring mounted shoe frizbie throwing or something!
Anyway cheers for the feedback, I will go watch some triple jump events on YouTube, try and get into the vibe
We need a score quick in the rugby, but we can't get the ball. Three tries down in the first seven minutes. Ouch. And another. This is a bit like the under 16s taking on the under 12s.
It's like men against boys, totally overawed. Too many errors, and just can't keep the ball. It could end up getting a tad embarrassing !
