SHANE FERGUSON could be back from injury in time for the explosive Premier League opener with Arsenal.

Toon boss Alan Pardew has a huge question mark over the left-back slot – with Jose Enrique thought to be a top priority for Liverpool – and has limited remaining options if he does not bring in a new face.

Once capped Northern Ireland player Ferguson has shown real promise at first team level in the last 12 months but lacks experience, as do alternatives James Tavernier and Paul Dummett.

Ryan Taylor and Danny Simpson have done a job there in the Premier League, but would be first to admit it is not their preferred positions.

Ferguson injured his ankle in the 2-0 win at Darlington last month with United staff fearing a more serious break.

Pardew – who oversaw a fringe team at Gateshead last night – also feels ankle victim Danny Guthrie could be back earlier than first thought.

And he told the Chronicle: “Fergie looks like he is going to be involved towards the back end of the week. Danny has also progressed very well.

“Those are two players I was hoping would really push for their place this year so it was a blow to lose them.

“Fergie gives us options on that left-hand side. At left-back we have an issue. Forget about Jose’s situation, no one player has covered that position particularly well.”

Meanwhile, Joey Barton arrived at the club’s training ground yesterday and was told to train alone. He left clutching some belongings before signing autographs for dozens of fans.

The Chronicle understands that the club are having a thorough review of their player policy on social media and exactly how it should be used, given the problems caused by both Barton and Enrique’s recent Twitter posts.

Ferguson and Guthrie would be a welcome boost, and I'm pleased to hear from Pardew that he hopes both can push for a place this season. And I think a twitter ban should be enforced, as much as I like having the players on twitter and being able to interact, it causes way more trouble than its worth.

Ferguson and Vuckic are seriously promising prospects and from what is being said, so is Abeid. The sooner they all get involved in the first team the better. Every time Fergie is on the ball it's exciting to see what he does next, he's like a little Beardsley on the ball. <ok>

I can see this Twitter ban will just lead to an explosion of illicit twitter-easys as in the days of Prohibition and booze.

Good to have Ferguson back soon

Ferguson would be wasted at LB but if we dont replace Enrique then a season there will at least teach him the defensive side of being a winger and will bulk him up too. Would rather use Kadar of our current options though. Prefer the solid, unspectacular centre back than the makeshift winger.

Totally agree on Vuckic - saw him at Leeds on Sunday and when he, Best and Sammie came on the pace of the game shot up. He was a class act and I was delighted to see him score

All 3 left footers, so they could be fighting for the same place in the team

Haris is more a no.10, and i thought Sammy was supposed to be a striker? that said, they won't necessarily be played there

Sammy has been used more as a winger in the reserves, Haris is a no 10esc player but realistically he has more chance of playing on the wing for the 1st team (to start with anyway), and we all know about fergie.

    EDIT;

    possible reserve midfield

    ----Richardson--Abeid-----

    -Sammy--Vuckic--Ferguson

not too bad, all young and promising

That's definitely a midfield/attack that has the potential to be world class in a few years time.... Given a bit of time for Sammy and Richardson to find their feet anyway
