Yes, that was what stung me when I was in Germany. I've been stung by the normal variety too in this country which was your standard black and yellow bastard but I did accidentally disturb a nest when I was out poaching...sorry hunting...foraging so my own fault.
The Asian one landed on my chest when I was sunbathing and just stung me because it was having a bad day

Not usually bothered by insects but hornets do freak me out a bit. They have a characteristic buzz also right?

I forgot to mention that it was shut in the lounge whilst I typed safely on the other side of the door waving a white flag.

Pretty impressive Hornets. The ones we get here are brown and yellow. Didn't know others are making an appearance! Fortunately never been stung by one.

Persecuted, they will soon be gone from this island.
Next time you see one, marvel at its beauty.

Loud low pitched drone, so you can hear them coming. The normal ones we see in Britain are more aggressive than the Asian variety (which I'll vouch for because they actually chased me before stinging me - glad only one stung me as there were several dozen chasing me) but there isn't a great deal of difference to how much the sting hurts. Apparently there's a Chinese variety that is twice the size of ours but unlikely to make it here.
I got stung in the eyeball by normal wasps as well as in my mouth and all over my face after disturbing a nest in a dark attic. Not allergic but still ended up in hospital just due to the amount of venom they delivered en masse. Wasps are bastards, no two ways about it but their larvae make great fishing bait...if you are loony enough to try and find a nest and extract the larvae. I used to just tape a plastic bag over the nest and kill the adults as they came out. I say used to as I haven't tried it since the eyeball incident :emoticon-0184-tmi:

How the feck do you get stung on the eye ball? Seriously. I've got into trouble at a few nests, got 13 stings once, but the other guy got 28. I didn't have the nerve to moan much. Feel sorry for Wasps, they are just voracious, they need food to reproduce. People flapping about kinda deserve the odd sting if you ask me. If we were not so sugar happy, we'd all get along better.

I was asking for it, crawling around in an attic to get to the nest. Got clumsy, tore the side of the nest when I was bagging it up and the whole mob just landed on my face and started stinging. I should have shut my eyes I guess but I was rather keen to get out of the roof space so needed to see. The follies of youth and all that. Well over 50 stings above the neck that time, according to the doctor who treated me. They're still bastards though, even if it was an unprovoked attack by me on their nest.:emoticon-0102-bigsm

Can't even imagine the discomfort of that. Anywhere but my balls, or my eyes, that's all I ask of nature,

Walked into a hornets nest as a nipper........not very pleasant. Was rushed to hospital where we were told that it was a wonder I lived through it as I had so many stings. Didn't realise they could kill you but apparently they can

Ain't it funny how actual hornets are more interesting than the prospect of playing Watford. :emoticon-0102-bigsm

When I was a child the loft hatch was in my room and we had a wasp nest in the atic. I got stung about 4 times in my sleep and didn't wake up. Not sure how but I was really sore in the morning and had dead wasps all around me.
