You going brand new? You can get a lot for 15k and second hand (ex-demo) a lot less.

Saw a used one with 1800 on the clock. Had a price of £11k and as you said was a ex demo. I don't mind used and 15k is basically the limit I set myself.

A to B for me. Within reason, I don't give a toss how ugly a car looks. I would want a car to be reliable, economical, cheap to run, have good handling and be responsive. The Yaris has it in spades. It's no wonder they hold their secondhand values so well. Beefy seems to be choosing from a sensible perspective. May I suggest resisting a diesel.?

On that separate note, no, but I know what you mean. Back in the 1970's, Japanese motorbikes became so quiet that they equipped them with tooting indicators. This was ridiculous, of course. A motorbike needs all the help it can get to be noticed, so a wee bit more exhaust volume doesn't go amiss, as they aren't exactly jamming the roads. By no means do I advocate wailing banshees though.

Honda Jazz is another one to be considered. Ultra reliable. And from FLT's point of view, not ugly. ;)

BTW, I have recently been asked to change a clutch master cylinder on a Vauxhall Corsa C model. Now, I realise that Beefy would be considering something much newer, but if Vauxhall have continued with the design component quality level of the Corsa C, then I would suggest you give Vauxhall/Opel a wide berth. Rarely have I come across such poorly specified, designed and manufactured original components. Certainly opened my eyes. The car I have been asked to look at has done less than 30K miles. It has had a very easy life and serviced by Vauxhall dealers until now, yet it leaks water freely into the cabin every time it rains; the gearchange varies from notchy to unusable; the electric steering hunts [it is constantly correctly itself]; the engine is slightly wheezy and has a flat-spot despite being fuel injected; the radio often gives up, and the dash lights flicker, due to connection oxidation through the damp atmosphere. And there are other more minor faults.

You'd think lemon, of course, but having done research on this particular model, none of these faults are uncommon. It's just a poorly designed car. Not a good advert for Vauxhall/Opel/GM. The Haynes manual for this model is thick. ;)

If I could afford it (not that I'm looking yet) I'd love an electric car. Even here in deepest west Wales there are a lot of recharge stations popping up but how do they cope with hills - some very steep - does driving up hills drain the battery too much? I have no technical/mechanical knowledge so sorry if this is a stupid question :)

Up until recently I had very little idea of the cost of the electricity to charge the average electric car. A full charge costs something like £2.50, which would be good for say 120 miles. Thing is, you don't buy an electric car like you would a fossil fuel car. You rent the batteries, for example. Typically £50-70 a month, on data I've found [I haven't looked far, tbf]

I'd also like an electric vehicle but I simply don't do the mileage to buy anything new. Every year I insure my bike for less than 3000 miles, and I get well below that. I do so much bicycling and walking, by choice. Also, bear in mind the environmental damage that still occurs just manufacturing new things, though manufacturers are working on this. Far better still to buy something secondhand if you have a heavy environmental conscience, in my opinion. Though of course, some people have to buy new so that we can buy secondhand ;)

Very sad.....I think people would enjoy their last years if they thought they could go when ready. They might even want to live longer when there is a choice. A friend of mine was pointlessly kept alive for 6 months....they kept giving her antibiotics for frequent infections when it really her body saying time to go. And incidentally increasing the chances of drug-resistant bacteria appearing. She was 90 when she died but the final 6 months consisted of illness and discomfort with odd days of lucidity after yet another course of antibiotics.

P.s. Have great memories of Brian Rix....he and his late wife were great entertainers.

Agree, Fran. My sister-in-law just watched her father go through 3 weeks of absolute hell as he had a stroke but they kept him alive, even though he kept saying he wanted to go. Very sad.

And also have great memories of Brian Rix - and not just falling out of a cupboard with his trousers round his ankles ! Great entertainer!

A bumble Bee landed on my printer about 10 minutes ago and as I went to find something to lift it off and back out the window, it walked into the printer where you feed paper at the top for copying. I looked in the 15mm gap and couldn't see it anywhere and even tried moving a piece of paper in and out to dislodge it. Now, 10 minutes later, it has just fallen out of the bottom where the printed sheets appear.... it looked a little dazed, but flew off ok.

    Bizarre.

I do wonder how many of the MPs who vote against euthanasia have ever lived through watching a loved one suffer. My Dad died of lung cancer years and years ago and I'm convinced that in the end the doctors gave him an overdose of morphine, mainly because my Mum collapsed in the hospital and it helped everyone quicken his death, including my Dad.

Yes, there have to be rules and regs in place but surely when someone in a lucid state wants to die then they should be given the means.

The argument is, some people may feel like they are a burden/pressurised. Brian Rix voted against legalising it himself. As you say under rules and regulations I think it should be legal.

I had the opposite of sorts. My mum had cancer for 8 years and had been up and down. I knew 3 months out from the end that the clock had finally started it's count-down. My family wouldn't couldn't see or accept that. The last few weeks for mum were awful and I had family members trying to search the world for a cure. I understood why they were doing this, but mum didn't want it and couldn't tell them not to. She told me. She was taking all sorts for them. Tough times.

And has now changed his mind because it's happening to him and he's realised how horrific a slow death is. I don't know how we ensure that people aren't pressurised into it - greater minds than mine can surely sort that out, though.

I know we're not talking cancer, but we have a not dissimilar situation looming in the distance. As you probably remember, my Mum is 101 and confined to bed. I fear my eldest brother is not going to let her go when her time comes. He's already showing signs of putting his interests of loss before her interests of quality of life. Her health stays on a remarkably even keel considering but it's generally on that steep downward slope, which gets steeper as she gets older. She has hardly anything at all that interests her these days, but she is delighted when she has her glass of red wine in the evening. And he wants to stop that because of the potential damage it might do to her and she might live longer without it. I mean, for pete's sake.! It's the only special highlight of her day. Of course, he can't abide alcohol, so he doesn't see any worth in it. It's quite selfish.

Really.? Well that has come back to bite him. Not saying that the lords would have decided in favour with his added vote, but now he's seeing it from the other side.
