The sort of prices being bandied about for Pogba, you'd want a proven match winner like Ronaldi, Messi, Bale. Not someone with potential, which is what Pogba is, but someone who's proved what they can do on any level.

You may be right. There were French fans who didn't rate Zidane! But then a lot of French football fans play the R card!

I fear this is just the beginning. We'll be seeing money like this bandied around very soon on "ordinary" players - unless something drastic happens (which may if I ever see a flying pig ..........)

I have been predicting the bursting of footballs bubble since about 1992. Shows what I know. Surely this can't go on forever though?

Not particularly looking at Pogba, but I think the BIG clubs feel they have to pay record money for a marquee signing....even if that means overpaying. And this is a season where there will be serious overpaying. Their fans expect it. Even some of our fans seem suspicious of a 'bargain'.

Pelle, Ravanelli, Zola and Vialli would probably disagree with you. I can't think of too many others that made the grade though.

EDIT - It would appear that I missed a full page of replies before posting this! Ignore me....

If you break it down as a 10 year investment, man utd will be paying 8.9 million a year which looking at it in that way is a bloody steal, considering how much money they will receive In shirt sales alone etc. He will no doubt perform on the pitch aswell as he is going to be the best midfielder in Europe in years to come IMO.

If you take away the fact United sold him I'm the first place , it's actually a decent bit of business. I despise man utd but I really think they have nailed this deal.

Well, it all depends on the TV money and how much poor suckers like "us" are willing to pay to the likes of Sky and BTSport for watching the games. I'm hearing that there's a lot of disquiet in the other Euro leagues about how much money the PL is getting, which is why they're trying to make a big thing of the Champions League.
Don't know how it would work, but I'd like to see more money being pushed down to developing players in the lower leagues instead of buying "marquee" players - don't expect to see it though.
The worry, potentially, is that owning a PL club will become more of a business, as there could be serious profits to be made. That will lead to more short-termism, managers out, "big" players bought and sold and instant success required. All plays into the hands of those "big" clubs who have owners with massively deep pockets. I'd love to see some of those owners found out and see how they would manage if they didn't have untold riches to bury in a club.

Not convinced. First off, who says he'll be at the top for 10 years? Perhaps he will, but perhaps he'll end up at Stoke or Malaga; no one can know for sure.

And the transfer fee is just the beginning; what sort of wages is he going to be on? even Ronaldo doesn't sell that many shirts, and he's one the CL how many times?

Ha! Very good. Yes, The Stranglers weren't my heroes either. But I still bought 4 of their albums.

What I'm saying is in reality they're not paying 89 million are they ,taking into account what they will get back from shirts etc so you can wipe that out straight away. So really it's just his wages you're paying, 250k-300 a week? And Rooney is on that already, yes it's a stupid amount of money, but it's the price you have to pay If you want to succeed.

Us and everyone else I think. I'd like to see him choose us thinking he'll get more first team chances, although same may be said about Spuds. He'll probably follow his mate to Liverpool.

Let's be honest, some of our fans want a marquee signing (just on a lower level).

That's the way I have been thinking for a few years now. I support the club not the players, I also don't get crazy attached to a player. I enjoy the time they are here obviously, but never think they will be here until they retire.

What are you basing the failures on?

How many Italians have actually come over in the top flight to play?

Not many. I recall Ravenelli, Lombardi in addition to those already listed, but don't remember that many coming over in the first place...

Will they sell over 1,000,000 shirts with POGBA on the back? Genuinely asking as that seems a lot for a player who isn't a match winner, the type of player kids put on their backs.
