New season, same rubbish. We're never going to get promoted on that performance if we can't break down defences... I can see today being a microcosm of the entire season.
Come and support Athletic Bilbao! I have and it is so easy!! I know Athletic are not going to win La Liga or the CL but they do have a chance of reaching finals of the Copa del Rey and the Europa League. In addition they develop talent born in the greater Pais Vasco region unlike Paul Cook's Portsmouth who just manage to accumulate "rubbish " and "cast-offs" from League 1 clubs. If Pompey do, as you fear, I would go for Brian McDermott as the manager. He knows how to harness young talent. And then maybe I would get interested in the club again.
Home Team: Portsmouth; Away Team: Carlisle Possession Home59% Away41% Shots Home23 Away2 Shots on Target Home9 Away1 Corners Home10 Away1 Fouls Home5 Away7 Above statistics show our total dominance in the match, but we did not take our chances . On a bright note, Carl Baker looks an excellent signing, took his goal really well, and created numerous other chances. Milan Lalkovic played well, as did Danny Rose and Gary Roberts. Good to see young Jack Whatmough fit again, and playing solidly in defence. 17,570 attendance is pretty impressive
At least your's got a point today. Mine were bleddy embarrassing. The results today looked a bit same old same old. The match officials also looked pretty much the same as last season as well especially the one with the whistle. This could be a very very very long season.
It wasn't the same ref you had at FP, in the playoffs then? Memories, sweetened thru the ages just like wine. I'm just taking care of business, uh huh.
I listened to the game on the radio as I was working yesterday afternoon. The commentary on Solent suggested a rampant Portsmouth side who were unable to capitalise against a Carlisle team who were reluctant to get forward. By all account ( and judging by the statistics) Portsmouth should have won. It was interesting radio as all the players are unknown to me other than Whatmough and Chaplin who are more celebrated as they are locally produce talent. However, the most intriguing aspect of the whole radio experience was the comments sent in after full time where the fans seemed to slaughter Paul Cook. Had the finishing been better, I am sure that the comments would have been extremely positive but the fickle nature of Portsmouth fans that always goes between two extremes always makes their contributions to phone ins entertaining. Two points were dropped when all three were up for grabs in the first match and already some of you have written off any promotion chances! Even from the radio commentary, it was clear that PFC dominated the match and had the goals been converted you would have been on your way. There is a tendency for Portsmouth to jettison managers after short notice. From an entertainment perspective, the game seemed pretty good on the radio but I wonder just how long it will take the "fan owned club" to want to resonate with it's supporters and say goodbye to Paul Cook. The one positive is the support which is little short of staggering at this level but the perceived under-performance on the pitch by the supporters and their subsequent reaction is always a source of amusement for us Southampton fans. The will they / wont they prospects of promotion is almost tragi-comic as you are struggling to get out of a league which is demonstrably too small for a club like Portsmouth. Personally I want to see Portsmouth remain in this league for one more season and face a newly promoted Eastleigh. I am not sure that this will happen but it is something most Saints fans dream about. Chance and luck seem very much part of promotion from this league and things will even themselves for you out over the season . All in all, the reaction to yesterday's result is probably a bit over the top after one match and I still think that you should be hoping for a play off position at least. I am glad that we never went quite off the rails like PFC during our travails but I still maintain that the FA's deduction of points during successive regulation campaigns has proved to have been a gross over-reaction and I doubt that the powers that be ever imagined that their unreasonable penalty would have seen you marooned in Div 2 for so long. Good luck for the rest of the season.
Well, Bilbao is one of three cities in Spain I've ever been to (along with Nerja and Santander). However, I support the mighty Minnesota Vikings in American Football which is not necessarily easy (missing a game winning kick from 27 yards with about 40 seconds left on the clock attests to that) but they have shown year on year improvement since I've been a fan (about 3 years) which is good. And due to the egalitarian nature of American Football, a team won't always be awful and generally they do get better. Except the Cleveland Browns who just suck. The problem is, Ian, this match just brings back memories of match after match of frustrating results from last season, a season that ended in disappointment (what's new?) thus while the performance may have been alright, it suggests that this season isn't going to be much different from last season even if it is only the first result of the year, hence why many fans aren't happy. History would suggest this isn't just a one off. Booing was completely unjustified though.
Reading the reports the difference between Saturday and last season appears to be that the Pompey dominance resulted in more chances being created - although not taken. Coaching and tactics play a strong roll in creating chances. However, it is difficult to coach senior players to take chances. Therefore I give guarded credit to PC for the improvement in the number of shots and the number on target. However, I am a little disappointed with the striker options he now has that he did not play 2 up front at home. Particularly given the selection - one stiker on the pitch and three on the bench. Excellent presentation of the teams 3nd Eye - thank you
