i did think.. dad's army then realised it was dunkirk. the threshold for war movies or shows has been set quite high by band of borther, saving private ryan etc etc.. I would expect this to be an all action ripper
That is the first teaser trailer, there will be more building up the action. Unfortunately Harry Styles has been given a part in it, no doubt to boost audience figures by having One Direction fans going. If his character gets killed off there will be lots of tearful teenage girls fleeing the cinema.
Private Ryan is kinda the bar by which all others are measured. Great story, great action, great acting. I like Black Hawk Down too.
Tbh i've never been into my war movies. Apocalypse now, black hawk down. Never seen them. Even saving private ryan i remember having it on TV watching it late at night and falling asleep. Only significant thing i remember about it was it had Vin Diesel before he got famous. Even Band of Brothers, stopped watching it after the first 3 eps Maybe i will enjoy them all now i'm older as i was in my teens back then. Been meaning to give Band of Brothers another go
Love my war films, even the oldies like The Longest Day. Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now, Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Dawn all great. There is a Mel Gibson one called We Were Soldiers which is also very good, set at the start of the Vietnam War, also has Greg Kinnear and Barry Pepper in it.
Black Hawk Down is a brilliant film. My eldest daughter hates war films and I was watching it on DVD when she was in the room, eventually she became engrossed in it and admitted she had enjoyed it. Private Ryan on a good surround system is fantastic for the beach landing scenes at the beginning, it then becomes just another war film really.
Actually, i remember watching Memphis Belle when i was really young. Really enjoyed that, i can imagine its **** nowadays though
Don't forget Paths of Glory, Dr Strangelove, Thin Red Line, Inglorious Basterds, Hurt Locker, The Pianist, Downfall, Flags of Our Fathers, Lone Survivor, Fury, Gone with the Wind, Empire of the Sun, Lawrence of Arabia, Enemy at the Gates, All Quiet on the Western Front, Schindler's List, Bridge on the River Kwai, Das Boot, The Reader, Son of Saul
Downfall is probably my favourite to be honest. Not a lot of action in The Downfall (relative to other war movies) because its more of a character study on Hitler and his cabinet during the Russian invasion of Berlin, but the performances are so immense. It was the first time Germany had made a World War II movie, prior to this, at school history lessons glossed over WW2, but about 20 years ago they decided to embrace their history, for good or bad. Was a good decision. The Downfall would probably be in my top 10 favourite movies full stop, never mind just war movies.
Was a good doco on the Somme on BBC recently, three parter looking at it from zee Germans perspective as much as from das Brits
Yeah I have always been hesitant to class it as a War film per se. Its just a film that is set during a war, but its not really about the war itself or the fighting. Not like Platoon or Full Metal Jacket. Love Tom Berenger in Platoon, ****ing great performance!
Last night band of brothers was on again. the 3rd episode. that was great action... better than private ryan. ............. is full metal jacket really a "war movie" like... there is a war setting but most of it sin't war unitl the end... its a true calssic. now old war movies.. the longest day.. the difference between this and both private ryan and band of brothers is now truely hilarious but its still a classic all great
