It's important to remember in all this that Fonte has a long contract.
Despite the offer of an improved contract on the table, we could quite easily say no to any approaches like we did with Morgan and Victor.

It's going to take a sizeable offer for us to sell

Obviously it isn't exactly the same as the likes of City and Chelsea's take overs, but essentially we were taken over and had more money to spend than everyone else. We spent that money on big transfers and effectively bought promotion back to the premier league.
If we didn't have that money we wouldn't have got promoted - simple as that. Although I appreciate there are huge differences such as the fact our club culture hasnt been ruined and we still focus on the youth academy etc.

Exactly, although it's far from conclusive it is strange. Fonte was Mr Southampton before the Euros and doesn't seem as interested any more. His body language at the friendly, the fact that there hasn't been an interview or anything in the wake of him winning the Euros, the fact that there has been an improved contract on the table for some time now. The longer it goes on the more anxious I'm becoming. Have a bad feeling about it, whether I'm prematurely pissing my pants or not, it still doesn't look great.

I think people are adding 2+2 and making 4578. Maybe there's nothing Saints related on Instagram lately because he's been on holiday and celebrating Portugal's Euro 2016 triumph.

But does he want to leave? That would explain his apparent lack of enthusiasm towards the club at the minute.

If Jose were to leave, then it would be sad, however removing all emotions, we'd be selling a 32 (nearly 33 year old CB) and in the cold light of day, that wouldn't be the end of the world in footballing 'on the pitch' terms. It would be sad for what football stands for these days and what it would mean to a lot of frans fans at the club. It would be sad for the club to lose such a talismanic figure.

He's not gone though and he is still a Saints player, so let's deal with it if it happens.

Yes that's very true. But since he's been back there hadn't been a single thing about Southampton? The coming season? His team mates? This isn't one of the quieter or newer additions to the team, it's our passionate, badge kissing captain lol. Like I said, I hope I'm wrong and I'll be the first to admit it if I am.

It's not exactly the same as Chelsea/City. It's nowhere near it either.

I asked a hypothetical question based on if we did something like City and suddenly elevated to the very top of the game, not how people felt when we were the wealthiest club in league one. To even compare the two means people haven't got my drift at all.

Anyone fancy answering the question in its context or not? :)

I'd be dancing about and taking the piss out of all the Liverpool/Utd/Chelsea/Arsenal fans who have been taking the piss out of me and Saints for my entire life

As for Fonte, whilst it would be a shame it could be a similar to Lambert situation. Last chance for Fonte to move to a big club and we have to replace him sooner rather than later, so if he does go for circa £10m he will go with my blessing and a big thank you for what he has helped the club achieve

Bit different due to the players ages, very unlikely a "big" team would be interested in a 33 year old Fonte next summer

With Fonte, we all seem to have been wanting us to sign a 'replacement' over the past few transfer windows. He will need to be replaced whether he stays this season or not, so why not get as much as we can for him while his stock is high? It wouldn't be ideal given that we've sold three of our best players already, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. The reason it would be hard to take is that he's been a lead figure at the club for many years and is the last remaining player from the League One days. Nostalgia and all that!

So the reason we think he's leaving is that hes not frantically posting on social media like some teenage girl?

How would everyone feel (and I know swap deals very rarely happen in practice) if he left as a makeweight for another player and we let him return home? Something like Fonte + £7m for Slimani of Sporting?

Just trying to gauge, how much of our feelings are because we don't want to lose Fonte? And how much are because we don't want to lose Fonte because he's been poached by a PL rival?

I think a replacement would need to be sought first before letting him go, IF he does leave. We'd only have Van Dijk and Yoshida fit...(other than youth).
