With the official inauguration of Hornet Heaven https://hornetheaven.com/ How about a thread we can we can post all that is great about WFC Feel free to post goals, passes, memories and celebrations
Being taken to the Vic for the first time. It resulted in a lifelong romance. There have been so many good times as a result, and some pretty awful times, too, when I have vowed never to go back - losing to Torquay in the old fourth division, for example. Your example, Yorkie, would have meant very little without that first visit.
Yes absolutely.... mine was the shingle bank on the rookery corner 1962 I think a draw against Portsmouth...... . .I could barely see etc etc From then on scarf, rattle etc...................
There are so many from pre-tv/video days that this thread almost seems unfair - Scully's goal against Stockport, Endean's goal at Swindon, George Harris' almost unbelievable far-post leaps, Les Taylor's goal at Wrexham - header from the centre circle, the 7-1 drubbing of Southampton. And off-field, my favourite away match atmosphere - 90 minutes of non-stop singing at Bournemouth in 1969 by an absolutely packed away end. All stored in my memory cells, hopefully never to fade...
Seeing the FA Youth Cup win v Man U, seeing my sons as mascots at home to Wolves in October 2005 and being a mascot at home to Sheffield Wednesday in May 1981.
For me one of the greatest ever Watford days. The GT machine at its most ruthless. I along with many were completely stunned with the result. An Unforgettable day... .shame about the camerawork!
Yes one of those days that stick in your memory. I still have the VHS Video you could buy from the club in those days of that game... nothing to watch it on anymore of course! But it was the whole match, of that dodgy camera work, no commentary (or background music). It really was a golden era, having Barnes and Callaghan come through at the same time, Barnes's skill and Callaghan has to be one of the best crosses of ball there has been, plus an excellent shot with hardly any backlift. The excellent hold up play of Roscoe, and the pace of Blissett. Must have been an absolute nightmare for opposing teams to defend, it was relentless
It was so good in those days... I remember witting to the club for a copy and they said it had been copied so many times the quality was so poor they could no longer copy it!
That was the last match of an extended stay for me - I flew back to Oz on the Monday after, with more than a few misgivings. Hope my Aussie wife is not reading this...
Thank you BB for finding that one. I have seen it before and love how it shows what a football crowd was like in those days. I was not there, although I did see my first game later that year. Just a few of the players I can remember, but they didn't seem to stay very long if they were any good. Probably where I first heard the expression, we wuz robbed, as a good goal by Taffy Davies was ruled out. The clip was the sort of thing you would see if you went to a cinema where they showed Pathe News. Very few people still had TV, so to see things like this needed a trip to the "flics". Both Mme and I have memories of going on holiday, catching a Green Line coach into London, then going to see cartoons and newsreels while we waited to catch a train to a seaside resort. It is no real wonder that when cars became affordable, people wanted the freedom that they provided.
I remember the chant of "We want ten" after the 5th goal great days .Then there was the Southampton 2ond leg that they was 4 nil up so they rested Kevin kegan and a few others the rest is part of our history .
Memory playing tricks on you brian? Keegan didn't play because he was injured & their only other change was Ivan Golac - both cancelled out as we had to play without John Ward and Steve Harrison. Unfortunately not a video - but worth watching...
I fondly remember Jason Lee smashing in a shin roll flickish volley from about 5 yards out. The net let out a small whimper. The crowd went wild. I am still laughing about it now. Probably my all time favourite Watford goal.
For me, this almost reached the heights of the Southampton game - well, the first half anyway. It gave us breathing space at the top from a rampant, third-placed Sheff Wed side, whose away form was the best in the division at that point. It wasn't the promotion clincher but it gave us a full head of steam to move on - if we had lost, I have my doubts that we'd have won promotion.
It's amazing what you can find in the darkest recesses of your laptop. Not exactly a great moment - but a rare one. Pat Jennings in goal, and saving us from a heavy defeat, against Peterborough in the 63/64 FA Cup.
