    I'm sure Celtic didn't think Virgil was their only chance of qualifying.

    And seeing as VVD had been on our radar for over a year, then why didn't we get him in time for Celtic to replace him?

    No, we got Caulker instead.

    Basically we would of wanted VVD as early as possible to improve our chances in the league and ensure more prize money. Celtic wanted VVD to ensure champions league football. Celtic got what they wanted we didn't seems pretty clear to me.

    I think you are being very picky to play this as a slight 'negative' on the club, Black. They got the deal done. Sometimes you have to respect your oppos wishes when negotiating. A Cortese machine gun is not always the best way.

    I agree. But when was the last time we showed any steel at all in any transfer, in or out? Morgan was the only time, and that was because there would have been an absolute riot.

    VVD had been in our sights for over a year, yet we waited til the last day (of a 2/3 month window) to sign him. I don't buy the argument that we had no option.

    Why haven't United signed Pogba yet? Been in their sights a long time and there seems to be quite a bit of money trying to talk.

    I'm a little surprised at your stance here Black; it doesn't seem your usual reasonable view point.

    I agree with your view, on Long.
    He needs to play on the shoulder of the CBs, to scare the life out of them with his pace, and be free to move across the width of the opposition back four, looking for the gaps.
    If you tie him down to a wide role, which will incorporate tracking back, his pace will be wasted, simply because he is coming from too deep,(and because his ball running skills aren't the best). He can more easily get away with a heavy touch, running beyond a player than when running towards/through them.

    I guess the time when we refused Celtic's demand for more money for VVD, patiently waited out their Euro qualification, got him cheap, and then he had no problems bedding in and enjoyed a great season.

    Have a look at his career history, moved for £11 mill to Fulham and not exactly been a flop despite playing in a poor side. Definitely isn't average at Championship level, probably the best striker in the league
