OK, that was a serious comment. Yep, I can see what you mean. However, each year we emerge from the close season with, seemingly, a weaker squad than before. And they've turned out to be stronger. This year, I'll admit it really does look weaker. We'll have to see when the transfer window closes whether it has turned out that way of not.

I see that he's been linked to Bournemouth (as Elphick's replacement) and Swansea (as Williams' impending replacement). If true, do these clubs not have scouts?

A lucky general can be better than a good one. :) He also has his invisibility cloak which prevents refs from giving him cards. I hope Jose hasn't got bad habits though...he did a couple of nasty fouls in Euro 2016 and got away with them.

The way the transfer window is at the moment I don't it really matters , you're gonna be paying a fair old wack for a good striker anyway.

True, but I sadly discount any of our youngsters being good enough to play in the Prem. We may have defensive cover, but attacking options off the bench look so weak. I think it will only be J-Rod, as I presume Austin & Long will start with Redmond & Tadic wide. Maybe just one up front, but that's an equal worry.

I don't think any team can sell two players who score 20 Prem Goals between them and not replace them. Especially a team in European competition.

I hope to be surprised when a new forward or two are unveiled... but I have a horrible feeling that's not going to happen.

Yoshida is a capable back up. Often the term back up is used in a derogatory sense as if a disaster is waiting round the corner, but sometimes it means what it says....he plays if number one choice isn't available. Yoshi doesn't scare me....he knows our players and system, so he fits in if needed. And he's a good lad.

I like Yoshida, and he has done okay for us, but he is pretty poor, and not good enough to be first choice deputy.
I'm ok with him as 4th choice, but his passing is completely erratic, and his clearances go to the opposition most of the time.
Unlike you guys, I do shudder when I see him starting.

    Hypothetical line up:

Forster, Cedric, Fonte, VVD, Bertrand, Romeu, Clasie, Davis, Tadic, Long, Austin

Bench: McCarthy, Pied, Yoshida, Ward-Prowse, Hojbjerg, Rodriguez, Redmond.

Still backup: Martina, Gardos, Targett, Reed, Gallagher

Without injuries we appear to have depth but little to get the crowd off their seats or frighten the opposition. This is a mid table mediocrity squad as it stands at the moment.....still hopeful LR will pull a white rabbit out the hat real soon

Highlighted is where we still need to strengthen in my opinion (I don't mean replace Long, just need more depth in that area). Don't think Romeu should be a starter for us. Are we going to play 4-2-3-1?

Can Les do the impossible, fly to Madrid and persuade James to come here on a season long loan? As things stand Chelsea have some very promising young strikers who do not look like getting anywhere near the first team so maybe one of them might like to come for the season, with permission to play against the parent club.

Yep I hope so too - I was just putting players in to get an idea of what positions etc. are covered on the bench.

Also that so far in pre-season Hojbjerg has always played 2nd half with the acadamy players, not first half with main XI

Solve our centre forward problems by playing VVD up front. He seems to have all the attributes you could possibly want in a centre forward.

Clasie and Hojbjerg for me. Unless we're playing away to the big teams where Romeu would come in.
