So my mate down the pub who maintained that we were going to sign two players was right all along and my mates and I all took the rise out of him. We may have to apologise this lunchtime.

Beyond our starting back four (assuming it's Cedric, Fonte, VVD, Bertrand) I think we have quite a weak depth there in terms of talent rather than numbers. Will be interesting to see how Gardos is after his injuries and I've never been totally confident in Yoshida. Could be a big year for some academy players to provide us with reliable backup, Stephens perhaps in particular.

Looking at the squad on paper it also shows we definitely need a winger and a striker so looking forward to what may be to come.

Well, well, well. We've signed another two players and there's a whole month of the window left. Anyone would think the Board know what they're doing and have everything under control.

This time a month ago, this forum was starting to implode. Maybe we should keep a link up to this, ready for next summer :)

Looking at the list posted by DTLW, a lot will depend on Jayrod's fitness and how the club view his return on whether we sign a new striker. Personally, I'm not convinced about young Sam, but I'll leave that to the coaching staff who know more than me.

Is Fonte back in training yet as his Facebook page indicates he is still on the beech. I don't begrudge him that after the Euro's but we don't have a standing that is anything as good as him.
I agree that we need another CB and striker but would add an attacking midfielder, Siggurdson from Swansea would be my premier signing of the summer

Beefy I'm pleased with the signings as good squad players are a necessity with the season we have upcoming. However I am merely saying that I hope that these two are just to wet the appetite for a more exciting signing, as Guan has commented on SW, of which the club are working on.
It was a positive day yesterday, and I'm positive everyday. :emoticon-0116-evilg

Morning FTL - the Board, as always, seem to have matters under control. The forum is not imploding like last season - which is great, but this has been an unexciting transfer window - to date. Let us hope for some more good news over the coming weeks. The last two transfers have added needed depth to the squad but I would suggest that we have not advanced on strengthening the quality of our squad and this needs to happen if we are to maintain our standing in the EPL. Let us hope that Les has some nice surprises for us.

(Back to Dubai tomorrow with my new shirt :emoticon-0100-smile - am very pleased with it - even managed to fit into a large - especially good given the XL looked like I was wearing a short dress:emoticon-0104-surpr. The new shirts are certainly a full length!)

Nothing gets my juices flowing like signing a back-up Goalkeeper and a back-up Right Back.

What a time to be alive.

A team is the sum of its parts...everyone has a part to play. I am much relieved by the signing of a back up keeper...remember we had half a season without Forster. Things happen.:bandit:

Exactly, which is why we need another striker, jay rod and Charlie will not last the whole season injury free, and we still don't know if jay rod is going perform as were hoping he will, he's a massive gamble. Same Gallagher for me isn't good enough from what I've seen, and Shane can't do it all on his own.

I really don't want to be on here mid November , when jay rod isn't performing and Charlie's injured saying I told you so.

A back up keeper was vital. Don't know much about Pied, but if he can play RB than we have, at the very least, another option in a position that gave us problems all last season. Maybe he can play RB with Euro winning inrernational star Cedric in front of him?

I have no doubts at all about Yoshida at CB personally. So long as he's not asked to play FB he won't let anyone down.

Fair to say Mane is the one player we haven't replaced. But then, while not wanting to exagerate his importance to us last season or put him in the Paul Scholes/Patrick Viera (different positions I know) class talent wise, some players just can't be replaced.

If we don't buy a proven striker (or at least one with potential) then it will be very, very stupid.

Agreed, gambling on Jrod being fit and in form would be a huge mistake imo.

Don't think Les does stupid, but sometimes things don't work out. If you can't get your first, second or even third choice, how low do you go before you decide that one of the youngsters could do just as well. I agree Mane is one of the hardest to replace...you can get a talented player in that position, but harder to replace that spark or pzazz that some players have.

Are we all saying that Mane played at 10 last year, and that's why we need to replace him? Because we have signed a speedy right wing player (which is where I consider Mane to have played much of his career).

More a case that Mane at his best was completely unplayable whatever his position on the park. There isn't a supermarket where you can get players like that off the shelf.

No we need to replace him because we haven't yet. Redmond is more a long term signing. I don't expect him to do a huge amount this season.

By 2 forward players I mean a striker plus either a wingeror no. 10. A lot on here thought we needed a number 10 before anyone left. As it is we've lost a lot of goals/creativity. Looking at DTLW's list and I think it's pretty clear we need 2 players in forward positions.

Agree Mane was more of a winger but a lot of his better work came in central areas too. As Archers said though, that talent and unpredictability isn't exactly easy to replace.

Of course, there's still a chance we'll unearth the next Luis Suarez. With our record you wouldn't actually bet against us doing that. Just a matter of when.

I also would like us to sign a goalscoring assist making defensive player with pace but i have always been very demanding.
