Something very unusual happened 50 years ago today..

    England won the World Cup!

Dare I ask is anyone old enough to remember it?

    Only the usual suspects :)
I have a programme from the finals having been to the England v Mexico game. Unfortunately I only watched the final on the box - in black and white of course

That was our 'nearly' year -if we had won the first match of the season at Darlington....

Oh yeah - and Pickles the dog saved England's blushes. :)

We had a few "nearlies" - first I remember was 63/4 when we were pipped by Coventry and Crystal Palace - I have just looked back and was surprised to see Bournemouth finished in 4th place that year

It was Millwall who stuffed us that year - relegated yet took 3 out of 4 points from us, including a first-up 3-0 away drubbing. I went to both matches against Coventry & both were absolute belters - such a shame there were no TV cameras there.

That World Cup win was 5 days after my Mum's 20th birthday, my Dad was 19 and they hadn't even met at that point.

    Bleeding kids. :emoticon-0105-wink:

My main claim to fame is that Geoff Hurst dislocated my wrist when I tried to stop one of his half paced shots. <yikes>

Apparently Jackie Charlton went out with some mates on the evening of the final and ended up sleeping on someone's floor in Leytonstone.

i was 4, born and living in Wembley. I remember the cheers coz we could hear them from my house. I also remember the fun of the England v Scotland games, they were a riot! Always a fair bit of a clean up needed after those!

I'd just graduated...watched it on a small b/w TV which made it look as though Wembley had a sloping pitch...

i'm guessing Scotland won? ;)...that may have been the year i wasn't allowed out because of all the smashed milk bottles lol. Wembley high road was always a fun place to be when the Scots came to town! It was a giggle for a little girl, though my mum didn't ever want me to go near football fans, bunch of thugs lol..she still doesn't get me!

You got it - England's first defeat after winning the WC the previous year, ending a 19 match unbeaten run. The sight of Jim Baxter taunting the English players by playing keepie-uppie towards the end of the game was something to behold - something I doubt will ever happen again. :)

The Hibs fans re-created the 1977 pitch invasion after the Scottish Cup final..
