Haha, was waiting for the first Ziegler comment. I thought he really had something at a young age and for a brief time was our best player. Then he got injured, lost form and basically never made it back. I also toyed with putting Dumitrescu in there
He only played 24 games for us according to Wikipedia though so you must think we have had some pretty poor left backs in the last 20 years if he is the best!!
And Dumitrescu only played 18! It's funny how hazy the memories get that far back. I speak for myself here but when you're younger you just have your 'favourite' players, sometimes for completely arbitrary reasons, and they just remain in your memory forever viewed through rose-tinted specs. Mine was Anderton; no amount of false-starts after an injury return could convince me that he had a flaw. But then again he was genuinely a class act. After him, Iversen became the best striker in the world - simply because I got a shirt for my birthday with his name on the back of it. That 1994-95 team was intriguingly good. As gung-ho as you can get with a lovely blend of youth and experience. But everything that could've possibly gone wrong that year, went wrong. Starting with the biggest ever punishment handed out to an English team, continued with Ossie getting the sack, then Dumitrescu got caught up in some sort of prostitution ring that more or less ended his Spurs career before it started (I recall my dad explaining to 8 year old me that he 'had asthma' ), then we had an awful run of form at the end of the season - not winning at all in our last 5 games - that saw us blow a UEFA spot, then we reached the FA Cup semi final and forgot to turn up against Everton, then at the end of the season Anderton picked up the achilles problem that would dog him for the rest of his career. In short, it was utterly Spursy.... ...And it was the last time we finished above the Nomads
I loved Dumitrescu. Can't remember what season it was but we went to Ipswich very early in the season in a midweek game, and won 3-0 and he was just outstanding. Even Ian Walker played well that night.
Lloris; Corluka, Dawson, King, Atouba; Ginola, Davids, VDV, Bale; Kane, Defoe. Atouba chosen for the pure **** of it but people forget how good Dawson was at his peak for us. Toby has had a great first season but he's got a long way to go to match Dawson. Not sure how I've left Mabbutt out tbh but I've done it now, no going back.
Just got in from pub so excuse if spelling or grammar is bit off. Hugo - One of the best in the world. Robbo would've been a sentimental choice as he had a great rapport with fans but Hugo is head and shoulders above anything we've had in the PL. Corluka - By far the best defensive option at RB, doesn't offer what Walker or Carr did going forward but with him in the back line there were less heart in mouth momennts. Ledley - As if I need to ****ing explain. Woodgate - So tough, Toby was unfuckingbelievable last season and near enough single handedly turned one of the worst defences into the best but Woody just edges it on the basis that he and King were our best partnership AND he got the winner against the Chavs in the Capital One Cup final. Benny - If you done this thread next season and Danny performed like he has over the past two years, then he'd get the nod, but I just feel BAE keeps the title of Prem best left back for the time being, he was part of a superb defence (alongside King, Woody and Charlie) and finally brought some sturdiness back to the LB position. Dier - Love this lad, my current favourite Spurs player, gives everything for the badge and all I see is a future captain if he maintains his form. Shout out to Scotty Parker though, what a DM he was. Luka - Was devastated when he left, even more so by the manner in which he ****ed off but this lad was a genius, I highly doubt we'll ever see a player like him at the Lane again. Bale - Again, another I was devastated to see leave on bad terms but has the ability to be one of the best in the world, in fact he is one of the best in the world, just needs to rid himself of that dodgy barnet and niggling injuries. van der Vaart - Nearly jizzed in my pants when we signed him, couldn't believe my eyes when SSN broke the news of him being on his way to the Lane and he lived up the expectations and some, what a player he was, even if 9 times out of 10 he could only last 75 minutes, in those 75 minutes he was often the best or one of the best on the pitch. Ginola - Beautiful man, beautiful skill... A rare breed of player, amazing knowing he put on the lilywhite shirt. Berbatov - Ahh man the hardest choice, Harry eclipses all when it comes to bursting on the scene and also scoring goals in a single season but there was something about Berba that was just majestic, he didn't need to score in order to have a brilliant game but he often did anyway. Oozed class, oozed skill, oozed goals, fantastic striker. Hugo Charlie, Woody, King, Benny Dier, Modric Bale, Rafa, Ginola Berba
Atouba was my 2nd choice behind Ziegler, that says a lot. What game did he do a drag back in our own 6yd box? Utterly amazing
He was on Talksport not long ago on Danny Kelly's 'my sporting life'. He was set to join Barca, met them and asgreed a contract but Barca wanted to pay in installments. That was a no no for Newcastle. We put an offer in and he moved because he was so set on moving that he could not remain at Newcastle after that, so he said.
I was about to commend you on such an attacking side rwaeb, then I noticed that you don't even have a goalkeeper
Why waste Lloris's time when he'd do nothing but stand around? Not that I'm reluctant to admit my mistakes...
I rate NPNG, and I'm hardly one to talk myself, but I genuinely think his team would finish mid table
I had to check the title of the thread as I thought maybe it was your favourite spurs team of the premiership era rather than the best! Some of the choices are extraordinary, particularly left back. I know it's not been our strongest area but how anyone can put any player above Benny or Rose amazes me. The only way around it I suppose would be to go 3 at the back and then it's problem solved!
