HBO have just picked up the rights to The Warlord Trilogy by Bernard Cornwell. No doubt they will stretch it to about 30 episodes, but they usually do a good job on a mini series. Band of Brothers, Pacific, GoT, etc. The books are a good read
Band of brother is back on sky... again.. my favourite ever show. Pacific is a struggle to watch. The reason being there's zero standouts like in band of brothers that you get behind. They are all flawed and struggle through. Game of thrones is what it is.
one of the best themes ever that, top top show Pacific is good but can't touch BoB GoT is good in the moment but totally disposable fluffage really, especially in comparison to something like BoB
Band of brothers has gravitas. It really happened. Its got that amazing story but also characters and performances that stand the test of time. Pacific falls down that while its got the same it really happened its got such grimness and theres really not one character that stands up like winters and they all are depressing in a way. But thats reality too. War is hell and that.
This is a good theme too by Hans Zimmer and different from his normal style which can be very samey Even despite that sameyness this is also badass music from a great film
Yeah what they went through in the Pacific and the Tropics was hell on earth, made being in Europe look like a feckin cakewalk sometimes even though that was horrendous, turn you into a grimmer pretty fast that
Watched the season 2 finale and ep1 of season 3 Penny Dreadful. Also watched more Preacher which has gone downhill a bit but still very good.
Just thinking on band of brothers v Pacific. Basically band of brothers would have been 2 years of training followed by 7 months or 8 months of fighting then the rest is a mopping up. Those in it retained some humanity and we're able to be the guys they were after. Pacific was basically 4 years of hellish conditions from island to island. The thing was grim so those followed were not right after it. I think it was hard to watch and no character really was "likable" in it. Winters was inspirational, doc was inspirational, there were very few dislike in easy company. 2 guys were really made to be a bit nasty and that was it.
Problem with Pacific was the very nature of the conflict itself, it was fragmented by the fact it was island to island. Makes a TV show difficult to watch because of the lack of continuity, jumping from location to location and frankly one jungle island looks exactly the same as another. The fighting was also so intense that soldiers were sent home or far back behind the lines. For a TV show this takes main characters away from the action, leaving two options, following the characters in the US or adding new characters. Again fragmentation, something BoB didn't have to worry about as most the main characters were in from start to finish. There is also less knowledge about the Pacific conflict, the European side is taught in Schools and its easier to get to (School trips, things to do on holiday in France etc) so it automatically relatable to with a base level of knowledge to whats what.
They wanted to follow marines in Guadalcanal so that shaped the rest of show. They could have followed the uss enterprise as a show. That had the continuity you talk about and heroic action.
and i quote: USS Enterprise (CV-6), was the seventh U.S. Navy vessel to bear the name. Colloquially referred to as the "Big E", she was the sixth aircraft carrier of the United States Navy. A Yorktown-class carrier, she was launched in 1936 and was one of only three American carriers commissioned prior to World War II to survive the war (the others being Saratoga and Ranger). She participated in more major actions of the war against Japan than any other US ship. These actions included the Battle of Midway, the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, various other air-sea engagements during theGuadalcanal Campaign, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. On three separate occasions during the Pacific War, the Japanese announced that she had been sunk in battle, earning her the name "The Grey Ghost". Enterprise earned 20 battle stars, the most for any U.S. warship in World War II and became the most decorated US ship of World War II. if that doesn't deserve a HBO show nothing does.
Realised now that Eden was on again, gonna watch before bed quickly, want to see that lad flare up over the girl that they teased, seems a right prick that fella
This is too hard to tell who the people are in Eden. Is it the same vet from the last episodes, the one all along, who's gone off on one at the cook over the girl? i.e. the ones who are basically in a relationship She loves the drama, that's for sure and not in debate He's a little beta prick with serious anger issues, you can't threaten to feckin kill someone mate, ridiculous overreaction
