More on goal. Gabi clipped in the free-kick, the ball flicked backwards off Walkes' head allowing Godin to tap home from two yards. please log in to view this image
Not played badly at all, but our defending at set pieces has been naff, although Walkes was unfortunate the ball bounced off his head into Godin.
I won't have time for the 2nd half but from the first 45 there are a lot of positives: As the half wore on, AM grew into the game and their superior experience and quality started to show. Despite the fact that we were pinned back inside our own half for much of the time, McGee really didn't have anything much to do and was helpless to prevent the goal. Given the inexperience across our back 5, I've been really impressed by their level of organisation, shape and their calmness in possession. CCV in particular looks cucumber cool and I've never seen this Walkes lad before but he looks like yet another prospect. Wanyama is an absolute beast whilst Winks looks like he's bulked up a bit over the summer: he now resembles a Power Ranger more than a Ken doll, which is progress. Eriksen looks horrendously rusty - as if his body is 2 seconds behind his brain in every decision, but the rust will wear off. Lamela again leading by example but Janssen has been starved of real service. I hope Onomah steps up in the second half as he became more and more anonymous as that half went on. Oh, and a shout out for Yedlin who is playing completely out of position but doing a fine job of it
What is the quality of the Atletico line-up compared to their usual starting XI (they obviously had a few on Euro 2016 duty) ??
Goal should've been given offside really. Godin was offside when the freekick was taken and the ball skimming off the top of Walkes' head doesn't constitute a second phase of play. Not too bothered though, it was a really good first half performance. Everyone but Janssen did well. Wanyama and Lamela the standouts again.
Mason and Janssen with great efforts on goal. Good saves from Oblak. Done almost everything right other than score.
Good contest this. Feared with the squad this could be akin to the 1998 England rugby "tour from hell" . But both matches haven't been remotely close to that.
Is that a typo of do we really have Kyle Walker, Kyle Walker-Peters and Walkes? What is going on over there?
Not overly keen on this playing ou from the back, having said that our youngsters and fringe players have really shown the right stuff. Janssen has been unlucky working his socks off ,Winks has looked good . Overall any of these would add depth to our first team squad
Decent performance...hard to judge preseason games (think we smashed Romanian 5 nil just before the start of the 08/09 season but didn't win a league game until the last week in October!) Have been impressed with our work rate and consistent pressing so imo the results are irrelevant.
