Not necessarily: Poch spoke of Dier and Wanyama moving back to cover at CB just the other day, Son is backup to Lamela (which would make Onomah the backup for the spot behind the striker)...and I am seriously hoping that Winks steps ahead of Mason as backup for Dembele.

We don't need more in the 3. Especially if this Georgey-Kevin comes. We could even lose 1 or 2.....

    Left side:
    Eriksen/Lamela/Son/Chadli
    Middle:
    Eriksen/Alli/Onomah/Son
    Right side:
    Onomah/Lamela

    Pacey:
    N'*

We don't always play with a speedster, so as looks likely Clinton can leave. I'd also argue that Chadli could go, the only thing being that he is kinda our 3rd choice striker.
If Son can play on the right too (not sure if i've seen that) then we actually look pretty balanced in those positions with 3+ players capable of playing there even if you remove N'* and Chadli.

I take your point. My post was a bit simplistic and aimed at showing what we've got in squad depth. this close season we've replaced Bentaleb with Wanyama (let's hope Victor doesn't spend the season injured). We've replaced Townsend with Georges-Kevin (I love that name.) Janssen replaces Clinton.

So, we're no better off than we were at the beginning of last season except Josh Onomah and Harry Winks are a year older. H All it needs is the odd injury and the squad starts to look more full of holes than a colander.

We're going to try and win something and re-qualify for the CL. We need more top quality players. I don't want to see another team like we put out away at Dortmund. That's just giving up and I don't want players run into the ground either. More numbers, more quality. Time to think BIG.

Son scored more goals from the right than anyone but Kane by my very unofficial count, a couple of them from very sharp angles, which makes me want him to be a semi-starter there. It would work with Lamela playing more often in the center or on the left, where he scores all his goals (not to mention giving all our starting mids more rest). But Son needs to pick up his game to the level of the four attacking starters. He would do well to try to do exactly what Lamela did: become an effective defensive forward first, and adjust to being the fourth out of four attacking options.

Even if we don’t get anyone else, I think we’re considerably stronger than last year. We have (theoretically) good backups in the two spots we had nobody last year (DM and striker). Our players are a year older, which when you have the youngest team in the league, means they should improve a lot. Remember, Bale went from Jonah to a pacy if erratic left back one year, to a very dangerous if not always intelligent LM a different year, and from there to the FA player of the year in a third (and fourth) year. Very good, very young players can improve tremendously in a short period of time. (Not to say that any of our players besides Alli and Kane are going to match Bale’s accomplishments) Our starting 11 have a year under their belt playing with the same system and the same coach/manager, which should also be a great advantage.

I never want to see Chadli play as a striker again! <laugh> <yikes>

I think we're well stocked in the "3", but I get where Brian is coming from. For me, Onomah shouldn't be counted as he's very young and he needs to be playing COC and FA cup games this year, as well as a few mins in the prem. Still, that leaves us pretty strong if we're presuming GKN is joining us.

I worry about us when Alli or Eriksen are having an off day/ineffective/injured. We are not the same team. We could still do with someone causing the opposition problems from slightly deeper area to take the burden off these two and open the final 3rd up a bit.

As for who that player is...

The benchmark Pochettino has set himself as a minimum is surely to get to the CL KO stages,
and automatically re-qualify for the CL group stages via the PL.

I doubt the on-paper squad of last season would be up to that task.

Most on here thought last season's squad would come 6th or worse. This season's squad is already better by two additions and every player is a year older and wiser. I'm really happy to strengthen if we can but I want to see two more additions at most, being players who are fighting for a first team place. Currently I think Trippier, Wimmer, Davies, Wanyama, Son and Janssen are in that category, with some of the youngsters hopefully added to that. No reason to panic.

It depends on how many of the youngsters MP plans on bringing through, I think.

There's no doubt in my mind that the exertions of last season on some key players proved too much towards the end of the season. That tiredness was evident in the Euros too. We don't want to see a repeat of that. We need a stronger squad, no doubt.

I have my doubts about Trippier ever being up to required standard. But if MP is happy to keep him for now..........

Given his being linked with Southampton, it does look like Tripper was signed to cover for Yedlin being loaned to Sunderland

Most on here also thought Chelsea and United would finish in the top 4 and Liverpool would be there or thereabouts.

Well that's a different problem imo. Not many teams can handle their best players being injured or off form. Chelsea looked a different team when Hazard showed up, Arsenal struggled if Ozil didn't provide any assists, City looked poor when Kompany was injured.
I'd count us lucky with the number of game changers we've already got. I think we were actually remarkably consistent last year. Take off the last few games (tiredness, inexperience, disappointment) and we outplayed pretty much everyone, even ones we lost. There were a couple of poor ones (West Ham was one, can't remember the other).
It was a damn solid season considering the squad depth and age.

And next you'll be telling me you didn't like Dempsey up top either!

Since we've gone two weeks without a contract negotiation becoming a pain in the backside...contract negotiations with Eriksen hit a snag as he rejected our offer, albeit he's still in negotiations. Given his current contract is worth £30k p/w, we should be offering him a salary at least on a par with Lamela's £70k p/w

Spurs are expected to complete the signing of winger Georges-Kevin N'Koudou from Marseille in the coming days, with Clinton N'Jie joining Marseille on loan, and then turn their attentions to a more central attacking-midfield player of the number eight or number 10 mould.

    Sky
sources understand they have an interest in the likes of Mainz's Yunus Malli, Dinamo Zagreb's Ante Coric and Anderlecht's Youri Tielemans among others.

The snail-drawn chariot carrying N’Koudou continues to approach White Hart Lane.

I’ve been less keen on a big signing than most, but I’ll make an exception. Not that we have a prayer of going for him or succeeding in getting him, but Riyad Mahrez might be worth skads of money to us because by signing him we might keep our rival from getting him. The same was true of Conte. As it happens, they also would have both addressed key weaknesses: a DM and a player who scores from the right.

Mahrez would be a fabulous signing. We've bought value and there's nothing wrong with that. However, what a splash a big name, big signing would make for the first few games and we need the goals a Mahrez would supply. I love Eriksen and Lamela but players that good need 10+ PL goals a season to justify being in a title challenging team.

Remember the buzz from signing Van der Vaart, Klinsmann, Lineker, Ardiles. I will never forget the home game against Aston Villa when Ossie and Ricky made their home debuts. The atmosphere was unbelievable. Okay we got buried 1-4 but it felt like the place was going to explode. The same with Klinsmann's home debut, incredible.

Somebody should probably tell SSN that Tielemans is not a "central attacking-midfield player" - the best like-for-like comparison for his role is Dembele. It would take literally five seconds to discover this via Google...

you're absolutely right mate, when teams have their best player/s out for whatever reason, it's going to make a big difference. I think what I noticed with us, is that we were always looking at those two to provide the service or creative spark. When it wasn't working that's when it became an issue. I don't personally think we have a game changer past the "First XI". Certainly not in the "3". I'm yet to be convinced by any possible attacking sub we could make. This is why i'd like us to see someone who can offer that "modric" option or something similar if possible. <ok>

Now you are in fantasy land 'Modric option' Even Real Madrid do not have two Modics do they. Son has had one season he is the kind of player who should be able to come on and make a difference as is the young Edwards or Winks come to that. I think you under estimate our resources Roo.

Ben Yedder signs for Sevilla. I'm not surprised he's gone to a very decent side. Sevilla are at a similar level to Spurs, apart from we have more money and they've been winning trophies. Their Director of Football is very good at spotting talent and they've got themselves a real talent there. I am disappointed we didn't sign him but given Gameiro's departure to Atletico, he'll get much more game time in Spain. At least he's not at The Gooners as was rumoured!
