New rules are being drawn up that would force each club to house visiting fans as close as possible to the action as part of ongoing efforts to appease travelling supporters and boost the atmosphere generated during games. Any regulatory change would come into effect in time for the 2017-18 season and would follow on from the announcement earlier this year that away ticket prices at all grounds would be capped at £30 until at least 2019. The 20 clubs agreed to the cap under pressure from fan groups – whose long campaign for a better deal for travelling supporters intensified in the wake of the league’s new £5.14 billion domestic television deal – and in the face of dwindling away attendances. With the atmosphere generated by travelling fans a key part of the image that has made the Premier League so marketable, addressing their concerns has become a priority for clubs. Writing a requirement for pitch-side away sections into the rulebook – which would also ensure the £30 cap is not used as an excuse to move visiting supporters to less attractive seating – would be the next phase of that. Exactly how many clubs will be required to make changes remains to be seen, although Manchester United may be granted an exemption due to a disabled section being immediately in front of Old Trafford’s away end. Most other teams already house at least some visiting supporters pitch-side during most matches, the obvious exception being Sunderland, who controversially relocated away fans from that position four years ago. The away section at Newcastle United is also at the furthest point from the pitch but they were relegated last season and would not be bound by any new rule until they returned to the top flight. The proposed rule change was welcomed on Wednesday night by the Football Supporters’ Federation, which said in a statement: “We’ve always argued that away fans matter. They are vital to football – whether that's from the perspective of the supporter in the stadium or the TV viewer who soaks up the spectacle. “For a number of seasons, we’ve lobbied the Premier League to introduce a rule to move all away fans pitch-side. A bloke fell from the upper floor of a shopping centre the other day. As those examples, completely irrelevant. You could have had a headline about the fact that over the years billions have watched from upper tiers far steeper than the 25degree rake which is supposedly the desired one, many far steeper than the 34 degree one of the West Upper without incident. A quick look on you tube shows many grounds around the world with far steeper stands with fans who are a lot more boisterous than they are here. The drive for fans to watch with quiet passion, a la PDK, goes on.
The logical place for the away supporters, after the Premier League ruling, is the north west or the south west corners. Out of sight of the TV cameras. The South West corner is presumably out because its the family stand. We could then look at reuniting the North and East stand standers and singers.
Pitch side is different to side of the pitch. Which one will it be? Can see concessions and fudges for the "big clubs", as in the Man U example but the smaller clubs having to comply so that the big clubs fans have pitch side seats.
Will be interesting at somewhere like Sid James Park - if they get promoted - as to my knowledge they've always stuck away fans as far away as possible. I think it's for their own safety to protect their ears from the Famous Jawdie Roar...
Could be interesting in other ways, given the apparent push for clubs to talk to fans,and I could easily have missed it, but if it's true, don't recall the consultation with fans, or seeing it minuted at a meeting.
Newcastle is the one who'd obviously be most against this, but they no longer have a say, I believe it's only Sunderland and Man United that would currently be affected.
I'm sure the club view is that they can still put them in UW as long as they put two seats for away fans pitch side as well
Oooh, they don't like been told what to do. Always looking for loopholes. Embarrassing. The problem with rules and regs is that it's accepted most clubs will abide by them. Maybe the PL handbook needs to be re-written using legal language & terms so all the loopholes are closed.
Which would seemingly be showing a united approach with the the other prem clubs, assuming the article is accurate.
They'd probably put a row of turf on the front row of the West Upper and claim the seats were still pitch-side.
Could be interesting to see how this is applied. Would somewhere like the Emirates where some are down the side and others behind the goal be OK. Can see police and SAGs having some qualms about this, especially where reconstruction will be required on concourses for toilets, catering, segregation etc.
