No it wasn't. Schneiderlin looked nothing great last season, but Kante looked nothing great for Caen two seasons ago. One season doesn't make or break a player, personally I'd want to see if Kante can continue his one season of fine form before showering him with praise.

But you couldn't. Kroos would cost £60m alone, and hasn't set the world alight at Real, with wage demands higher than Pogba. Koke would be around £80m and isn't available, neither is Nainggolan, and Pjanic is nowhere near as mobile as Pogba.

Besides which, we have the money in the bank, so don't need to settle for a second choice player, or even two second choice players, just to save money. That's where Moyes and LVG went wrong with Fellaini, Depay and Rojo - better to spend the money on the player we need than go for ones we don't just because they are cheaper. Read your own sig, it makes it all much clearer <ok>

That's why Leicester players are in a hurry to cash in on their success. I don't think even they feel they can replicate it if they stay.

Comparing koke, pjanic, kroos, niaggalan to Fellaini Depay and rojo <doh>

Quite a difference in '2nd choice' players there.

True, but there's also quite a difference in 1st choice players going from Pogba to Fabregas, Pedro and Clyne.

Ultimately the principle is the same - going for a 2nd choice player is generally rarely a good idea, particularly when you can afford the 1st choice player and choose to compromise just to save a bit of cash.

I'd have thought your experiences of the transfer committee and the endless disasters that foisted on your club would have taught you that. Or do you really reckon you'd still be as bad as you are if Rodgers had been allowed to spend the Suarez money on one or two top class players rather than being forced to spread it around on muck like Lallana, Lovren, Moreno and Balotelli because that made better 'business sense'?

Apparently Juventus are trying to squeeze the maximum money out of United hence the delay:

    The cost to United:

To Juventus: E120m or £100m+ for the player.
    To the agent: £20m
To player (over 4 years): £80m (200k per week net is £10m after tax of 50% or £20m before tax)

The total cost will be at least £200m.

    And..

The player wants to keep the rights of sponsorship and marketing his own stuff and brand. That will be a huge sticking point for Woodward who would have wanted to recoup some of that money through commercial ventures. Something that Real almost never allows.

Wow.. this is real sad. Have you allowed anyone to have their own commercial brand before let alone Real?

Off hand I cannot recall any player using the club for his own sponsorships and keeping 100% of the income. I think Beckham had some freedom at United and at Real every sponsorship he himself managed to get, the club would take 50%.

Becks is a special case scenario. he is more marketing & commercial than footballing. More like Anna kournikova of football.

But if Real doesn't allow Ronaldo, Bale et al & you haven't allowed anyone - there is no point in setting precedence with Pogba.

This will be substantial - especially after the wages being quoted after tax.

    Scandalous comment.

Beckham could ****ing play, he also won an absolute **** load during his career.

I can't stand this trite cliche from clueless bellends that it has somehow evolved that Beckham was in some way an average player, it's bollocks and merely exposes you again as someone who knows the sum of **** all.

Anna can play as well <laugh>

Becks made as much if not more than - Messi, Ronaldo, Jordan, Lebron, Kobe, Shaq, Woods, Federer, Djokovic - in commercial deals.

Without being anywhere closer to the world beaters the other guys are / were.

    You see my point?? <doh>

    No.

    Kournikova won **** all.

She WAS just a fit bit in a skirt, Beckham was a cracking footballer. Therefore not the same.

You don't have a point. Putting a facepalm merely highlights that.

Pogba needs to realise that it is only by being at a club of our stature will he get the global exposure necessary to make a success of any sponsorship/product deals. It is no accident that Zlatan has chosen to launch his A - Z sports clothing range as soon as he signs for us There is no way Pogba would try this on at RM - they simply wouldn't stand for it so I suspect that (if true) this is simply part of the on-going negotiations for image rights/royalties. Start high, meet in the middle.

We should pull away from this deal with "take it or leave it". This is a player whose Agent is greedy as fk and he himself thinks that he is the new Ronaldo. Pogba is simply riding the wave of fame and we have helped fuel it. Juve now also need the money so unless they have another offer from either Real or PSG, they are in a sticky position. Don't count out other clubs trying to get one over United by going for the player - Chelsea, City, etc. But he can forget about his brand being worth half of what he thinks if he goes the latter two.

I suspect thats what happening. That and the agents fee. Unprecedented and high at 20%. It is like buying another mid priced player at £20m. Normally it is the selling club to pay a small % as part of the fee negotiated. But Juventus were happy to agree to whatever the agent insisted on as they were getting a top player for free.

BTW United did get Pogba for the very little too and caused great anger at the time for buying the youth player for a pittance with all sorts of incentives to parents etc. Just a shame we did not manage to get him to stay when he was ready.

Juventus are really trying to push it to the limit, knowing full well that they have a fall back position. Real has already intimated via Zidane that they would like to buy the player. If it falls through with United, they just turn to Real and sell for the £85m that Real said they value the player at.

He won't be getting the insane salary that has been agreed if he joins Real. That would be a major loss for him and his greedy agent.

Yep. It would be nearer to the 1/4 billion than to my minimum £200m. The budget of some of the mid table premiership clubs.

But even that astronomical financial outlay can be offset by some commercial deals. That is why it is so important for Woodward and the GGs that they stick to their guns and not let Pogba make his own deals. Not on a salary of £220k/week NET.
