That's usually the opposite of what Redmond does, heh. Norwich fans used to get really frustrated with the fact that he constantly cut inside into traffic and lost possession rather than take the space given to him in order to work a cross.

Also, given that he was playing for a piss poor team who had a shocking 2nd half, if he's ready to take over Mane's role (and be just as good), shouldn't he have, more often than not, looked like one of their better players at the very least?

Wide, creative/chaotic players tend to be a fairly mercurial breed. Part of the reason that Mane/Tadic both came in for a fair bit of criticism is that we effectively could not afford for them to have off games, because we had no one else in the squad to provide that dimension. Both are more refined players than Redmond...he's talented, but he still has a lot of growing to do. Thrust him into a situation where we're relying on him to provide everything Mane did with little to no fallback and he'll end up getting a lot of stick for what will ultimately be a team construction problem.

 

Wasn't aware I was starting an argument, it was based against what you said, and a bit of a Q if people thought Redmond was the Mane replacement.

In previous seasons we have signed VvD, Mane, Toby, and Ramirez right at the end of the window.

 

Simply because people EXPECT Saints to go to the shops and pick up a replacement in the Winger Aisle. I find it amusing when direct comparisons are made, comments are made that seem to be 'complaining' about lack of signings, spending, etc and then I go on other threads and people are lording Leicester for their elachievements which seemed to be based on signing value players, creating the right team spirit and keeping people together.

Each season we lose players and buy new players. It has worked to improve us every season so far. The team will "tweak" and evolve.

 

Its funny how we always have the moaning every summer, you'd have thought people would have learned, sit back, enjoy the friendly games and look forward to Watford.

I did and me and the boy have our tickets for the opening game and cant wait, no matter who is lining up...

 

Heh, I think you must have misread. The past few pages are me moaning that we are going to sign someone, and others stating that we will probably not and it's fine.

 

Well others have ended up having the Mane/Redmond debate. Fortunately it didn't roll into seven pages (yet)

For me, I like Redmond, I liked Mane, although he frustrated me and he was never worth the money they paid, and he was never as good as many thought he was on here.

I'm fairly sure we will sign other players and am fairly relaxed...

Saints said to be back in for a player they tried to sign before: Trippier from Spurs. Also says this could be our last signing.

 

And what did Mané do two years ago when they were the same age? I remember when he first got here people thought he was crap at the start. I'm keen to see what our coaching staff do with Redmond and his raw materials.

Look, I suspect we will sign another wide player as it happens, but I'm also excited by Redmond.

 

Players suit some clubs more than others....we have a good record of polishing gems in the rough.

 

Please no, I'd rather we just keep Martina if we were signing below average right backs

 

Fully understand where your coming from regarding Mane, but although he could fraustrate, he also had the ability to turn and win games single-handedly and thats why they were prepared to splash the cash.

Perhaps we are going for stealth rather than pace this season. They won't spot us coming because we will stop every time they look round...like an EPL game of statues.

 

I'm excited about Redmond, too. But thrusting him into a position in which we're building him up to be a direct replacement for our most dynamic attacker, with scant other options if he cannot, wouldn't be fair to him. Even if we think that Redmond is the second coming, we need (and the evidence suggests, methinks, that we'll sign) at least one other creative wide player.

 

I do agree with you. I just think Redmond might surprise a few people this season.
