Why? We have done it before with Mane and Tadic, could even argue that J-Rod or Long can play wide in a 4-3-3, plus whatever youth there is available.

We did do it before with Mane and Tadic. We also suffered through long stretches of futility when one was off the boil, and Redmond is not Sadio Mane. Neither is playing Jay or Long in wide areas likely to provide us with much of a creative spark, nor is "whatever youth" likely to fill the shoes of one of the more dynamic attacking mids in the league.

Luckily, I haven't seen much indication that the club believes similarly...I fully expect us to bring in someone else at the position.

I would prefer if we did, but reading between the lines I think we won't be signing another attacking player.

I'm not going to start the "7 pages of bickering" based on a fictional difference of opinion

That might be the case; I can't imagine why, though. We have the need. We have the money. There are plenty of creative wide players out there, many of them pretty cost-effective.

It seems like they both went off the boil as a result of K***man being a K*** , and they were played on the wrong wings for how long? If Redmond is first choice right side then he is Mane´s direct replacement. Mane on his day was unstoppable, Redmond may not be that but I am hoping that he will add consistency which was the main problem of Mane.

I think it's a bit much to suggest that Koeman was the only reason. Injuries happen; periods of down performance happen. It's why you cannot be wholly reliant on one or two players to provide an important dimension to your squad. Particularly now that we'll have even more games to play.

And one of the biggest knocks on Redmond is his inconsistency; after beginning the season in excellent form, he had a five-month stretch last year where he contributed 1 goal and 1 assist in 24 league matches. I like him as a third option, but he has shown little to date to suggest that he can be a primary creative outlet.

I am hoping & expecting us to sign at least three more players, as we have a smaller squad than last year & more games. I expect us to be solid but unspectacular; lacking goals - although if we play a high pressing positive game I will be content!

Can't deny that, and as you say, he was inconsistent.
I'm struggling to see why he is held up as this unstoppable, match winner, when he rarely shows up.
There were long stretches, last season, when, if his work rate had dropped, no one would have been bothered had he been dropped. During those games he was just another player.
IMO, it was the late flurry of goals, towards the end of last season, that has given him a status of being irreplaceable, in the eyes of some. Time will tell if that is the case.

It was his world class performance vs Liverpool that caused them to buy him. They obviously aren't aware that that was about the best game he ever had in a Saints shirt. If they're expecting him to do that every week there's going to be some disappointed people in Liverpool next season.

Why is everyone convinced that Redmond is some kind of stop gap. Why can't he be Mane's replacement? He's 22, he's quick, he's got an eye for goal and he goes missing for stretches of a season. If we can improve his consistency he'll be a cracking player.

So....exactly like Sadio Mane then. Except younger.

On his day, Redmond is a good player. When he's off the boil, he's utterly useless.

On his day, Mane is utterly unplayable. When he's off the boil, he's somewhat useless.

In the PL, Redmond has averaged a goal or assist every 346 minutes.

In the PL, Mane has averaged a goal or assist every 158 minutes.

Have we seriously gotten to the point where we're rationalizing a straight swap of Sadio Mane for Nathan Redmond as a good thing? I mean, we were chasing Boufal, so I don't even see any evidence that the team thinks that we're set for wide players.

Redmond was playing for a pretty piss poor team who had a shocking 2nd half of a season, I think his stats at the end of the season will be very close to Mane. I also like that Redmond runs into space whereas Mane ran into defenders a lot when with the ball
