    5:30 carlisle - yulong xiongba 5/1

My mate is part of the syndicate for this horse and apparently a good run is expected today. The horse has been a bit tricky to train in the past but Julie Camacho has started to get some good runs out if him recently. Josh Doyle was on him last time and retains the ride today, his advice was that he didn't see out the mile on soft ground and the horse would be seen to better effect over a shorter trip, so drops back to an extended 6f today. He also has his preferred ground. No such confidence as to say he definitely wins but they are desperate to get this horse to win and have been trying hard to find him a race, hopefully today is the day.

Okay, let me start this with a wealth warning.

This horse has not won in two years and has never won in this country – only career win when trained by Johnny Murtagh. Last time out it was a moderate third in a lowly apprentices’ handicap at Hamilton.

Today it wears first time blinkers, hood and earplugs, indicating a certain level of exasperation on the part of the trainer, putting all those aids on concurrently. Quite frankly, this looks more of a candidate for a French restaurant or the glue factory than the racecourse.

Despite all these negatives, Julie Camacho’s Yulong Xiongba is favourite in many lists for the Carlisle 5:30.

The only reason I am passing this on is because my mate gave the first-time-out two year old winner at Salisbury last evening and he has been told this beast by a friend who is in the syndicate that owns it.

Personally, I will be saving my ammunition for Goodwood, a meeting that last year was Not So Glorious, yielding ten losers and just one winner (first bet: Toormore in the Lennox Stakes), effectively representing more than all of my losses last year in five days.
